SAGE Establishes Perpetual Annual Scholarships for the Moorpark College Foundation
SAGE Publications, an independent international publisher of journals, books and electronic media with headquarters in Thousand Oaks, has partnered with the Osher Foundation to benefit Moorpark College students every year with two $500 scholarships. The perpetual scholarships are awarded through the nonprofit Moorpark College Foundation. The scholarships are designed for students interested in English, writing, or journalism.
Moorpark, CA, January 23, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Moorpark College Foundation announces the establishment of perpetual annual scholarships by SAGE Publications, an independent international publisher of journals, books, and electronic media with its headquarters in Thousand Oaks.
The SAGE endowment will begin with a $500 scholarship in May 2011, followed by two $500 scholarships each year beginning in 2012. The endowment is the result of a partnership with the Bernard Osher Foundation, a large philanthropic organization working with community colleges in California.
“Moorpark College extends our sincere gratitude to SAGE for this wonderful act of generosity for our students, each year, forever,” said Moorpark College President Pam Eddinger. “SAGE already was a strong supporter of the college, and the decision to partner with the Osher Foundation to create two annual perpetual scholarships truly is a remarkable act.”
The endowment scholarships are an expansion of an original SAGE endowment plan that was generating interest to eventually fund a yearly scholarship of $500 to Moorpark College students. Eddinger presented the opportunity for perpetual scholarships if the company partnered with the Osher Foundation’s matching opportunity.
“SAGE’s mission is to support the dissemination of knowledge at the college level and we are particularly proud to establish a scholarship for students interested in English, writing, or journalism,” says Martha Zeiher, SAGE Manager of Community Relations. “That we were able to leverage our donation into a perpetual scholarship due to the Osher Foundation’s support is icing on the cake.”
The scholarship endowment campaign began in May 2008 with the announcement of a $25 million lead gift from the Bernard Osher Foundation to support community colleges in California. The Osher Foundation has pledged a second $25 million to provide a 50 percent match for additional funds raised through 2011.
For every dollar contributed to the endowment, the Osher Foundation will contribute 50 cents. For example, a contribution of $13,334 results in an Osher Foundation match of $6,667, which results in $1,000 worth of scholarship funding each year forever. Information: www.supporttheendowment.org.
The SAGE endowment is a promising start for Moorpark College in 2011. For the past 3 years, the nonprofit Moorpark College Foundation has delivered more than $100,000 total in scholarships for Moorpark College students, including $104,000 in 2009-10 awarded to 159 students, from 84 donors.
The Moorpark College Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c) (3) corporation that is designated to receive gifts for the college from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Established in 1980, this volunteer board of community leaders broadens the educational opportunities of Moorpark College students through scholarships, program grants, and capital projects.
