Start-Up Makes Mobile Giving Accessible to All Non-Profits
Mogiv allows donors to give any amount via text, e-mail, and the web on a single, integrated platform.
Encinitas, CA, January 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- With the recent rise of high profile text-to-give campaigns, such as the Red Cross’ Haiti relief, many non-profits around the country have set out to explore using mobile giving for their organizations. Unfortunately, upon investigation many non-profits have found that the existing mobile giving solutions are too limiting, too expensive, or simply not available to their organization.
Enter Mogiv, a San Diego-based start-up. The founders behind the young company believe their recently launched technology is poised to transform the still young mobile giving space.
“Our goal is to remove the constraints that exist in the current platforms, and to offer the power and promise of mobile giving to non-profits regardless of their size or resources,” said Mogiv Co-Founder and COO Matt Hayes. “We have a passion to deliver a really useful, accessible tool-set to non-profits, so that ultimately they can have more resources and spend more of those resources on the good stuff that they are doing.”
Current mobile giving systems restrict gifts to small, preset denominations ($5 or $10 being the most common). Existing systems require an annual contract and include monthly service fees in the hundreds of dollars. The application approval process can take many weeks. Perhaps most problematic is the lack of donor data that organizations receive about their mobile donors.
In contrast, Mogiv allows donors to give virtually any amount. During their live beta period, the company has processed individual donations from $1.00 to $10,000. Mogiv charges no monthly fees and there are no annual contracts. Instead, organizations pay a small fee ($0.44/per gift + merchant fees) to process each gift they receive. Fees on the Mogiv platform average 3%. The Mogiv application process is simple and fast. In fact, a Boston-based church recently applied, was approved, and took their first donation on the same day. Finally, Mogiv provides real-time access to complete donor data and allows organizations to instantly message out to those donors via the platform.
Mogiv also plans to deliver the platform to other organizations, like churches, new non-profits, and small-to-medium sized non-profits which simply aren’t eligible to use the current systems. The current systems require that the organization has filed a Form 990 with the IRS (something most churches do not do), have been operating for 1 year, and have revenues of $500,000 or greater (a threshold most small-to-medium sized non-profits don’t meet). In contrast, Mogiv only requires that organizations are recognized as a tax-exempt non-profit organization and are in good standing with the IRS.
Mogiv helps leverage donor participation through social networks by enabling givers to automatically update their Facebook status whenever they join or give to a campaign. The system makes it easy for participants to share their Mogiv experience through social web sites. By integrating Facebook with the giving experience, the Mogiv system helps non-profits communicate better with their donors while also promoting their causes to potential new donors.
“We’re pioneering a new and sustainable approach to mobile giving, and making an impact on people’s lives at the same time,” said James Lawrence, Mogiv’s Co-Founder and CEO. “Being a part of helping events and organizations succeed is why we created Mogiv.”
Mogiv was created by James Lawrence and Matt Hayes, who prior to founding Mogiv Inc. in 2009 brought with them extensive experience in building technology products. It was their experience working together in a non-profit organization called YoungLife that motivated them to develop this technology. Mogiv is the resulting technology to make fundraising and donor engagement more efficient and effective for organizations, allowing them to focus more resources on doing the truly valuable work.
