Deco Lighting Saves Tempe, Arizona 50% in Energy with New Dark Sky Friendly Induction Lighting

Commerce, CA, January 27, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Deco Lighting’s new green technology Induction lighting fixtures were selected by the City of Tempe, Arizona to replace inefficient outdoor streetlighting. The new Induction lighting provides Tempe with 50% energy savings, 100,000 hour lamp life for long term maintenance savings, more natural white color illumination, and better visibility for citizen safety. The Deco Lighting D829i Acorn style decorative street lights adhere to Dark Sky friendly requirements established by the IDA (International Dark Sky Association) that protect ecosystems and astronomy by eliminating wasteful skyward light. “The driving force behind the replacement is they are more energy efficient and provide a lot better lighting. They also have zero maintenance for roughly 20 years,” said Alan Rady, Tempe Public Works lighting systems coordinator. The new Induction lighting is expected to save the city about $71,000 annually. Induction lighting uses far less kilowatts per hour than the existing HPS (high pressure sodium) lights, resulting in estimated annual energy cost savings of $46,965. Because the HPS fixtures require relamping every three years, the substantially longer life of the new 100,000 hour Induction lamps will save the city an additional $24,000 in annual maintenance costs.

"Tempe residents prefer the more natural, whiter light from the Induction fixtures," Mr. Rady added. The existing HPS (high pressure sodium) lamps produce an undesirable yellowish color cast that is often detrimental to signage, storefronts, pedestrian and vehicle visibility and safety. HPS lamps also require several minutes of warm-up time for full brightness when first energized, and similarly long periods for restrike after power interruptions. Induction lamps turn on instantly and are far more durable and vibration resistant, as they do not use an electrode (filament) that is subject to breakage.

Funding for the new 2,000 fixture Induction lighting system for the City of Tempe is paid for by Federal stimulus money. Tempe was awarded Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant and Community Development Block Grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
