Pets for Patriots Debuts in Arizona to Help At-Risk Shelter Pets Find Loving Military Homes

Not-for-profit Pets for Patriots partners with the Arizona Humane Society and University Animal Hospital to help U.S. veterans honorably adopt and care for companion pets.

Phoenix, AZ, January 28, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects shelter pets with U.S. veterans, wounded warriors and service members, is joining forces with the Arizona Humane Society to increase the adoption of adult and other at-risk dogs and cats. University Animal Hospital in Tempe will offer discounted veterinary care to animals adopted through the Pets for Patriots program.

“As a leader in the animal welfare community, the Arizona Humane Society actively pursues new and innovative partnerships and programs that will not only have a direct impact on the lives of animals, but also the people with whom they share their lives,” says Guy Collision, AHS Executive Director. “The Pets for Patriots honorable adoption program seamlessly integrates the adoption of pets with the honoring of our nation’s heroes, and we look forward to being a part of it.”

In support of the charity’s mission to make military pet ownership affordable, University Animal Hospital in Tempe will extend an ongoing 10% discount off all veterinary fees for any eligible dog or cat adopted through the Pets for Patriots program and brought to their facility for veterinary care. The hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), a Pets for Patriots national sponsor.

“I joined the program because as a veteran myself, I appreciate all that our armed services sacrifice for all of us,” says Dr. Thomas Gus, owner of University Animal Hospital. “This is a way I can say “thank you” to all who serve.” He adds, “My hope is that in our participation, we can relieve the worry that some in the military might have concerning the welfare of their pets.”

Individuals are eligible from any United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers: active, reserve, retired or veteran, as well as those transitioning to civilian life. Eligible pets must meet one of three criteria: an adult dog or cat (two years and older), dogs over 40 pounds regardless of age, or special needs dogs and cats. Joining Pets for Patriots is entirely free to veterans.

“We’re thrilled to mark our launch in the state of Arizona with such outstanding community partners,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “We encourage all veterans in the greater Phoenix community to experience the unique joys of companion pet adoption and the benefits of adopting through our program, including high-quality, discounted veterinary care and direct financial assistance to make pet food, supplies and basics more affordable.”

Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval typically takes a day or two, after which veterans can visit the adoption specialists at the Arizona Humane Society for assistance in choosing their new best friend, and University Animal Hospital for high-quality, reduced cost veterinary care.
