New Exhibit in Ronald E. Holstein Gallery: Let’s Ride a Bicycle Made of Friendship and Rainbows! Works by Krysten Allen: on View at the Erie Art Museum

Let’s Ride a Bicycle Made of Friendship and Rainbows: Works by Krysten Allen. On view January 21, 2011 – April 30, 2011 at the Erie Art Museum.

Erie, PA, January 28, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Erie Art Museum’s Ronald E. Holstein Gallery comes alive with the quirky and delightful works by Krysten Allen. Allen, a graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation and a minor in Art History, draws inspiration from fantasy, science fiction and comics. “Mostly I’m inspired by comic art, video games, bad sci-fi movies and pin-up art,” she says. Allen’s style is similar to that of Heavy Metal magazine, which publishes science fiction and fantasy comics. She also finds inspiration from contemporary artists such as Jamie Hewlett, Lisa Yuskavage, Sho-u Tajima, Yoshitaka Amano, and H.R. Giger.

Allen tries to bring levity and humor to her works, creating characters, settings and situations that are both engrossing and fun. “Art doesn’t always have to be this strange thing that you need a text book to understand,” she says. “It can just be some fun, entertaining silliness. I think it’s important that people keep imagining and dreaming and don’t get too caught up in ‘growing up.’” Allen’s digitally colored drawings come from her work in comics and animation. Each piece begins with a hand sketch that is scanned to a computer where she ink and colors them.

Allen has completed several commissions for comic-styled works in addition to creating her own comics. Visitors to the Museum may recognize her style; in 2009 she created illustrations for the Erie Art Museum’s Family Guide to the exhibit Ancient Alloys: Bronzes from the Collection.

A public reception will be held during Gallery Night, Friday, March 11, 2011, 7 – 10 p.m.
