Tom Stevens Sponsors Edge-of-the-Box Event: Holden Thorp to Address Association of Corporate Growth

Tom Stevens, owner of Think Leadership Ideas, is sponsoring the January Breakfast Meeting of the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG). The featured speaker is Holden Thorp, chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill and co-author of “Engines of Innovation: The Entrepreneurial University in the Twenty-First Century."

Hillsborough, NC, January 29, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Sometimes all we need to spur innovative thinking is another person’s perspective. Tom Stevens, owner of Think Leadership Ideas, is making sure this cross-pollination of ideas happens right here in the Triangle by sponsoring the January Breakfast Meeting of the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG). The featured speaker is Holden Thorp, chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill and co-author of “Engines of Innovation: The Entrepreneurial University in the Twenty-First Century.” ACG attracts members who are well-versed on mergers and acquisitions. Thorp’s arena is academia and research.

“Edge-of-the-Box thinking,” Stevens says about the term he coined, “is about the cross-pollination of ideas and perspectives, rather than seeking something radically new. Innovation is a natural by-product of edge-of-the-box thinking.” That “edge-of-the box” thinking is what motivated Stevens to approach Thorp about speaking to ACG members. Thorp’s book speaks to the role of the research university in our changing world and current economy. Corporate leaders are faced with redefining their place and strategies as well.

“We’re all invested in addressing the challenges our new economy has brought to us,” Stevens says. “And, especially in the Triangle area, we have incredible synergies we can build upon between the business sector and our research universities.”

“This event represents multiple intersections of roles and perspectives,” says Stevens. “I have had opportunities to interact with Chancellor Thorp in my role as mayor of Hillsborough, the county seat where UNC is located. I greatly admire the Chancellor as a leader. When his book was published, I immediately thought about how beneficial it would be for our ACG chapter to hear about it directly from the author.”

Stevens has been a member of ACG for eight years and serves on the chapter board of directors as membership chair. Debra Michie, executive director of ACG, is appreciative of all Stevens brings to the organization. “Tom is a stellar board member. He has wonderful follow-through and, as a speaker and business consultant, brings a different viewpoint to our chapter. Sponsoring the breakfast at this month’s meeting is just another example of how he steps up.” Sponsorship of the breakfast is $500.
