Nashville, TN, February 08, 2007 --(PR.com)-- On June 2, 2007, Kalilah Allen will represent Tennessee in the Miss Black USA Scholarship pageant held in the West African country of the Republic of the Gambia at Independence Stadium. President Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh is the Honorary Chair and Official Host of the 2007 national pageant. The Official Pageant Hotel in the Republic of Gambia is the beautiful Kairaba Hotel.
In observance of this year's pageant theme, “A Royal Journey Back to Our Roots”, the contestants will begin their voyage with preliminary judging in Washington, DC on May 20th. Preliminaries will consist of a closed interview, an open question and answer session, a fitness contest, a talent showcase, and evening gown. Adding a new twist for the contestants this year, the participants will also be judged on their knowledge of African culture and tradition. The final ceremony is then held in the Republic of Gambia where Miss Black USA 2007 will be crowned.
During her reign as Miss Black Tennessee 2006, Kalilah Allen has anticipated the chance to compete for the national title, and most of all, to travel to Africa. “I am very excited. This will be my first time visiting the country and I look forward to having the chance to embrace the history and heritage of my ancestors.” Allen, 22, a native of Montgomery, AL is a student at Meharry Medical College. She is a graduate of University of Tennessee Knoxville with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. While preparing for the national pageant, Allen has remained committed to the current state title by building her platform through the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and supporting Walk for the Cure. If selected as Miss Black USA, Allen will win a $20,000 scholarship and become pageant spokesperson.
“The national pageant being held in Africa is a lifetime opportunity for all of the delegates representing the United States. In preparing Kalilah to win the national title, we have developed a dedicated committee to help keep her focused and assist with all categories of the competition,” says Eaine Cato, state pageant director.
