The Eclipse of America’s Agricultural Roots: Power and Tender Published by Outskirts Press

Veteran author Margret Russell’s newest work is historical fiction as she follows the journey of young Ben Alton who follows his heart and chooses the sea over the soil during this turbulent era after the opening of the Panama Canal when America shifted from its agricultural roots.

White River Junction, VT, February 04, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Author Margret Russell announced today the release of Power and Tender, published by Outskirts Press. Through the eyes of an intrepid young boatman from Virginia, Russell presents an America emerging from its own isolation from international commerce after the opening of the Panama Canal in 1910 began the financial and cultural decline of the country’s grass roots agronomy.

The completion of the Panama Canal had suddenly opened up to foreign competition the fight for international trade rights in armament and commerce. Young Ben Alton -- already impressed with his uncle’s brass buttons, sleeve bands and endless sea stories of the peoples from far around the globe -- decides to leave his agricultural lineage and become a sea pilot.

His land-bound background is a barrier, however. Pilot appointments go to the sons of pilots, men who have never had to stoop their backs to scratch out a living. Undaunted, however, Ben goes on to become a supreme boatman of Virginia by 1920; but still he dreams of the more glamorous role of coastal pilot.

Power and Tender follows Ben’s heroic, but sometimes heartbreaking quest and opens up for readers a comprehensive view of America’s struggle during that era with the new importance of corporations and politics while the country’s agricultural roots -- and the culture nurtured by them -- fade further into our nation’s history.

Power and Tender is available on-line in paperback through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore for a maximum trade discount in quantities of ten or more.
