Talking Lights® Optical Locating Patents Sold
Talking Lights LLC has sold its patent estate in through-space optical communication and optical locating to Philips of the Netherlands.
Boston, MA, February 05, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Talking Lights LLC of Boston, MA announced today that its patents for optical location and communication have been sold to Philips of the Netherlands.
Talking Lights LLC is a leader in optical communication and indoor locating through the flicker-free modulation of existing building lights and light fixtures. The technology has been demonstrated in areas that include monitoring and guiding patients with traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, providing assistive technology for persons who are blind, enabling smart security badges, and tracking systems for personnel and equipment.
Dr. E.C. Lupton, President and CEO of Talking Lights LLC, said, “We are pleased that our patents for optical communication and indoor locating will be carried forward by a company like Philips, which is world-renowned for its innovation and commercialization capability.”
According to Dr. Steven B. Leeb, Chairman of the Science Advisory Board of Talking Lights and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “Philips is a leader in lighting and networking systems and is well-positioned to take advantage of Talking Lights patents.”
Talking Lights LLC was founded in 1998 and has been awarded a Discover Magazine award for technological innovation as well as two R&D 100 Awards.
The company has received support from the US Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program, a highly competitive federal program designed to advance technological innovation, encourage participation by small companies in federal research and development, and resolve research questions for federal mission agencies in a cost-effective manner.
Talking Lights LLC received SBIR support from the National Eye Institute, National Institute on Aging, National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research of the National Institute on Child Health and Human Development, National Institute for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institute on Drug Abuse, all of the National Institutes of Health, and from the US Army, US Navy, National Science Foundation and National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research of the US Department of Education.
