Magnolia Creek Treatment Center for Eating Disorders is Pleased to Announce a Free Eating Disorder Education and Awareness Program for Colleges and Universities

In an effort to help create a healthier community for all, Magnolia Creek announces the creation of its free College Campus Partnership program. This program is designed to provide college staff with the tools and skills needed to recognize, treat and prevent eating disorders among students.

Birmingham, AL, February 08, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The college years can be tough. In fact, it is often during these years that young women become particularly susceptible to the development of eating disorders and other unhealthy coping skills.

Some theories as to why college-age women are more prone than other demographic groups to the development of eating disorders include fear of gaining weight during freshman year (also known as the “freshman fifteen”), increased reliance on self-control and regulation as methods for success, and having to learn how to prepare healthy meals and maintain an active lifestyle on their own without parental help or prodding.

Besides having an overall negative impact on health, disordered eating can lead to less energy, disrupted sleep, cardiac risk, osteoporosis and sometimes an increased risk for suicide and other self-harm behaviors. Magnolia Creek Treatment Center for Eating Disorders has recognized this problem and has offered to be part of the solution with the creation of its innovative, research and practice-driven College Campus Partnership (CCP) program.

Some aspects of Magnolia Creek’s CCP program include free bi-annual training of college counseling or health center staff on topics such as eating disorders treatment and prevention, suicide and self-harm and building resiliency, access to current and cutting-edge research, assistance in developing a National Eating Disorder Awareness Week on campus, access to licensed Magnolia Creek staff as a resource and much, much, more.

“At Magnolia Creek, we realize that assessing for and treating eating disorders is complex,” explains Dr. Nicole Siegfried, Magnolia Creek’s Clinical Director. “Our College Campus Partnership program is a way for us to educate college staff in screening for, treating, and preventing eating disorders.”

Through the creation and free distribution of its CCP program, Magnolia Creek hopes to help college professionals recognize, treat and prevent eating disorders among high-risk student populations, thus enabling students to remain in school, build resiliency skills and create a healthier community for all.
