Fashion with a Heart

MIKE Program presents "Our Community Gathering: It's the Fashion to Love Your Kidneys!" a benefit fashion show produced by local entrepreneur Kenneth Doswell of BJC Productions LLC: "My vision is to bring excitement through an infusion of color, music and fashion." MIKE Program works locally to enrich the lives of teens and empower them to be ambassadors of health. "I enjoy the fact that they want to use fashion to get their message out," says Doswell.

Portland, OR, February 10, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The success of one Portland Pop-Up Shop is benefiting more than the local economy. Kenneth Doswell of Flurry, a collective of 14 fashion designers, is putting together a fashion show as well-tailored as his personal line, BJC Productions, March 12. The show will feature some of Portland’s most exciting clothing, jewelry and accessory designers to benefit area teens with MIKE Program.

Now in his second year with both Flurry and MIKE Program, Doswell is producing a show to feature a variety of designers, showcasing some of the most captivatingly unique talents in the region. “My vision is to bring excitement through an infusion of color, music and fashion,” says Doswell.

Like Flurry, the collaboration between public-private partnerships is becoming a necessary strategy in today’s market. Doswell’s support of MIKE Program extends that model to the nonprofit sector. Doswell says he continues to support the mission of MIKE Program because it provides youth with a healthy lifestyle foundation that will prevent kidney disease. “I enjoy the fact that they want to use fashion to get their message out.”

MIKE Program Description: Multicultural Integrated Kidney Education Program (MIKE Program) works locally to enrich the lives of teens and empower them to be ambassadors of health. Our purpose is to decrease the number of people whose kidneys fail because of obesity, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, risky behaviors, and negative social situations. The youth we serve often face socio-economic challenges or have family histories that may lead to increased risk of kidney failure. We recruit and train caring adults, often from the ranks of health professional students, to be health mentors. Paired with teachers or youth workers, the mentors team with groups of young people to guide progress through MIKE Program’s comprehensive adolescent health programming. Over a period of months, meeting weekly, mentors build trust relationships with youth and help build life skills known to lead to academic and career success. Working in a cooperative environment, the youth develop a service project to help their peers, families, and communities adopt healthier behaviors.

MIKE Program is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (EIN 45-0520604)
