Oldcastle Precast Manufactures Special Precast Sewer Pipes and Fittings for Philadelphia’s Interstate 95 - Cottman/Princeton Ramp Project
Philadelphia, PA, February 11, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Oldcastle Precast, Inc.– Croydon, PA was contracted by Tony DePaul & Son to design, engineer and manufacture custom precast concrete pipe and fittings to replace the proposed junction chamber which helped keep the work safe, on schedule and on budget as part of a $30 million-plus project to reconstruct Interstate 95 at the Cottman Avenue Interchange in northeast Philadelphia.
New water, sewer and gas mains are mostly in place beneath Cottman Avenue and workers are continuing work on the first of two phases in the Cottman Avenue interstate improvement plan. The project involves building two new highway ramps, replacing sewer lines and relocating water and gas lines as work is done on the roadways and improving surface roads—including two one-way roads that became two-way—to divert traffic away from residential areas and improve access to I-95.
Oldcastle Precast manufactured 1,154 linear feet of precast pipe for the new sewer line-- 352 linear feet of 48-inch pipe, 472 linear feet of 54-inch pipe and 330 linear feet of 84-inch precast concrete pipe. In addition, Oldcastle Precast worked with DePaul to produce special precast concrete fittings for the sewer line. Their challenges included an 84-inch bend, 84-inch x 54-inch wye fittings and two 84-inch x 15-inch fittings. The custom precast fittings for the sewer line eliminated the need for a poured in place concrete junction chamber allowing the work to get done as soon as possible. All pipe and fittings were installed by Nello Construction Company, a sub contractor of Tony DePaul & Son.
Financed with 90 percent federal and 10 percent state funds, the crews are currently working on the $31.9 million Interstate 95 - Cottman/Princeton Ramp Project and expect to complete phase one work in August 2011. Tony DePaul & Son out of Blue Bell, Pa, is the general contractor for the project.
