Bishop Jugis of Charlotte, North Carolina, Profiled in Book on “JP2” Generation

Charlotte, NC, February 12, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Peter Jugis, Bishop of Charlotte, North Carolina, is among those profiled in a newly released book chronicling John Paul II’s lasting influence on church culture (Living Miracles: The Spiritual Sons of John Paul the Great by Randall J. Meissen, Mission Network: 2011, ISBN 9781933271279, $14.95 soft cover).

Jugis says that during his years as a University of North Carolina accounting student, interior discontentment with “humdrum life” and a coincidental encounter with a parish priest led him enter the seminary. By a remarkable turn of events, Jugis went on to be both ordained a priest and appointed bishop by John Paul II. Now he boasts a connection with the saintly pope that few can match.

At the time of his appointment as bishop in 2003, Jugis was only forty-six—among the world’s youngest bishops. The Charlotte-native had some initial misgivings, but in a subsequent meeting with John Paul in Rome, the pope calmed his nerves, “When I was named bishop,” the visibly ailing pontiff recalled, “I was thirty-eight. I was much younger.”

Throughout his ministry, Jugis has tried to emulate John Paul’s example of spiritual verve and constant availability. “The pope gave you a lot of time,” says Jugis. “He never gave the impression that he was rushed or wanted to be done with you.”

Living Miracles, a book based on dozens of interviews with bishops, priests, and seminarians, gauges the impact of what has come to be known as the “JP2 generation.” Its publication follows in the wake of the Vatican’s announcement of John Paul II’s beatification, scheduled for May 1—an announcement which opens the door to official sainthood for the popular pontiff.

Also released in this book are previously unpublished details regarding one of the alleged miracles credited to the deceased pope. This instance concerns the stunning recovery of Carlos Vasquez of Madrid, Spain, from Crohn’s disease following prayers to John Paul II.
