T&D Europe Celebrates Scandinavian Contribution to Advancing the Smart Grid

Copenhagen, Denmark, February 16, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Scandinavian market has made an invaluable contribution towards advancing the smart grid, says Aida Mezit, project director of the Transmission & Distribution Europe and Smart Grids Europe conference and exhibition that is taking place from 12-14 April in Copenhagen, Denmark. Utility experts, regulators and technology giants from all over Europe and further afield will meet at what is the leading utility forum on the continent. Some top Scandinavian experts are also on the programme.

Transmission & Distribution Europe project director Aida Mezit says, “The Scandinavian market has been instrumental in advancing smart grid rollouts and many of the most sophisticated technologies have been implemented first in the Nordic region. We are pleased with the speakers we have been able to confirm so far.”

These include:

- Mathias Ekstedt from the Royal Institute Technology Stockholm will address the increasingly pressing issue of cybersecurity on the energy network;

- Timo Kiveri from Fingrid will present an update on the Scandinavian Fenno-Scan interconnector project;

- Jussi Ahola from ABB will expand on the Finnish distributor Fortum’s mammoth task of centralising one of largest network operations in Europe.

Fundamental remodelling of the power supply system
“The upgrade and modernisation of Europe’s electricity grids to meet increasing demand and carbon emission targets has been identified as a key energy infrastructure priority for 2020 and beyond”, says Aida Mezit. She continues: “the emphasis is on fundamental remodelling of the power supply system, to allow integration of renewable energy, facilitating network access and cross-border interconnections in the recently deregulated energy markets. The last few years have seen a surge in intelligent energy applications, such as smart devices, virtual power plants and electrical vehicles and it is this optimisation of all elements in energy value chain: from generation, supply to distribution that defines smart grid, and is the first step to full energy integration.”

She notes: “The aim of Transmission & Distribution Europe and Smart Grids Europe is to combine the regional know-how and practical implementation of advanced new technologies and systems in view of offering a comprehensive European overview of the energy networks and the central place of electricity as an alternative mode of energy supply.”
