Love on Valentine’s Day and Every Day for Veterans Adopting Shelter Pets

Not-for-profit Pets for Patriots teams up with shelter and veterinary partners in Urbana-Champaign to help veterans give shelter pets a second chance at life.

Champaign, IL, February 16, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects shelter pets with U.S. veterans, wounded warriors and service members, is joining forces with the Champaign County Humane Society to increase the adoption of adult and other at-risk dogs and cats. Country View Veterinary Clinic in Champaign and Beaumont Small Animal Clinic in Urbana will offer discounted veterinary care to animals adopted through the charitable program.

“Beaumont Small Animal Clinic joined Pets for Patriots so that we could give something back to those who have given so much,” says Dr. Kurt Beaumont, owner of both Beaumont Small Animal and Country View clinics. “Pets for Patriots focuses on those animals that would likely go unadopted due to their age, size or health issues. These animals deserve forever homes and we are honored to provide them with excellent veterinary care.”

Both veterinary clinics will extend an ongoing 10% discount off all veterinary fees for any eligible dog or cat adopted through the Pets for Patriots program and brought to their facilities for veterinary care.

“The real benefits of our program start at adoption,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “By providing high quality veterinary care at a reduced cost, and giving direct financial assistance towards the purchase of pet food, supplies and other basics, we can minimize the chance that veterans return their new pet friend due to short-term financial hardship.”

Eligible pets must meet one of three criteria: an adult dog or cat (two years and older), dogs over 40 pounds regardless of age, or special needs dogs and cats. Joining Pets for Patriots is entirely free to veterans.

Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval typically takes a day or two, after which veterans can visit the adoption specialists at the Champaign County Humane Society for assistance in choosing their new best friend, and Beaumont Small Animal Clinic or Country View Veterinary Clinic for ongoing care.
