The Medal Play Golf Tour Enjoyed a Picture Perfect Day at La Quinta Dunes
La Quinta, CA, February 17, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Medal Play Golf Tour resumed play on the Pete Dye designed Dunes course at La Quinta on Sunday. “It was perfect conditions for golf,” said tour director Blane Freytag. “The resort is first class and they had the course in great shape. And who can beat 78 degree weather in February?”
The Championship Division was a tight race between tour veterans Shaun Clark and Jay Rein. Clark used a fast start on the front nine to hold off a charging Rein by a single shot. Rein seems to have the hot hand early on as he won at Terra Lago last month and followed up with this runner up finish. Tom Bernardello, from the Los Angeles tour, took the top Sr. Championship honors for two titles in as many starts.
In the Gold Division, Yuri Pikover, also from the Los Angeles tour, won his 3rd event in a row with an impressive net 75 to easily outlast the field. Pikover was recently promoted from the Silver Division and resumed where he left off, in the winners circle.
The Sr. Gold Division ran into a buzz saw with tour veteran David Onken shooting the low round of the day with a net 65 to win by 10 shots. Bob Pillow and Alan Forbes were 2nd and 3rd respectively.
John Maldonado, a tour rookie in the Sr. Silver Division, improved his score 6 shots from Terra Lago last month to win his first event with a net 69. Greg Widman was knocking on the door with a net 72 while another tour rookie Gregg Christie posted a net 75 to claim 3rd. Tom Goodwin was the low Silver Division participant with a net 80.
The tour returns to action with the “Medal Play Masters”, a Major worth double points, on March 13th at Red Hawk GC in Temecula, CA. The next event is also a Media Day event where interested players can play the event before deciding to join the tour.
