San Diego-Based Resident Receives Opportunity from Porch Step to Take Cancer Survivors on Shark-Swimming Excursion

Man Who Lost Mother to Cancer Wishes to Share Experience of Swimming with Great White Sharks.

Knoxville, TN, February 17, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Porch Step, a lifestyle media company has announced it will provide San Diego resident, Brandon Bethea, the supplies he needs to take cancer victims swimming with Great White sharks, an experience Bethea found to be life-changing, after he lost his mother to cancer.

On December 20th, 2010, Porch Step asked Americans, “How could $2500 help you or someone you love accomplish a meaningful goal in 2011?” Bethea, whose story, “Saved by Sharks,” was among numerous entries from throughout the U. S., sharing personal stories on how winning the Five Simple Things Challenge could bring about positive and significant change in their lives or the lives of loved ones.

“It inspires me how many people came to our site and were so open about how $2500 could positively change their lives,” said John Tolsma, Porch Step CEO. “What I found more remarkable is how many of the submissions were sent by people wanting to express gratitude for their good fortune or to use it to help somebody else.

The Five Simple Things Challenge was born out of Tolsma’s recently published book, 5 Simple Things, a journal and daily guidebook.

While Bethea was not the grand prize winner of the Five Simple Things Challenge, Porch Step will provide him with the diving gear needed to take cancer survivors on an excursion where they can swim with sharks. “The Porch Step team wanted to do something to help him with his resolution to reach out to others. The key here is not votes or the challenge – it’s more about how Brandon’s story impacted us – and overall, how his passion and values represent the Porch Step brand and 5 Simple Things principles.”

From December 20, 2010 until January 24, 2011, visitors to www.5SimplethingsChallenge.com cast their vote for the story they felt was most compelling.

“My hope is that those who submitted their stories and those who voted for their favorite stories will use this challenge to continue to refocus on what matters most – faith, family, community and the future,” said Tolsma. The simple daily principals of thanking, doing, believing, reaching out and practicing random acts of kindness allow us all to experience a more meaningful and satisfactory life.”
