Students Get on Board with The Smallpeice Trust for a Career in Engineering
Leamington Spa, United Kingdom, February 18, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Independent educational charity The Smallpeice Trust is looking for 13 and 14 year old (Year 9) students with an interest in engineering and technology to apply to attend a Nuclear Marine Engineering course from 19th to 22nd July 2011.
This Nuclear Marine Engineering course will see students taking part in valuable educational activities at Royal Navy base HMS Sultan. Students will be given the unique experience of getting to stay on board HMS Bristol providing them with a real insight into life as a nuclear marine engineer.
Delivered in partnership with the Royal Navy and Babcock, this course gives fifty students the chance to work alongside professional engineers, and take part in practical workshops and lectures as well as spending time in a laboratory learning about radiation and gamma ray spectroscopy. Visits to local sites including Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and HMS Alliance provide students with a unique insight into real-life engineering.
All Smallpeice courses are designed to improve core skills such as team building, communication and problem solving and are also linked to the National Curriculum. By attending one of their courses students will gain experience of university life and industry that will accelerate their personal development and their potential for greater academic achievement.
The course is subsidised and costs £145 for 4-days full board, all course materials and supervised social activities.
Students are advised to apply early as applications are reviewed and places offered on a first come first served basis. Application forms can be accessed from www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk or by telephoning 01926 333200.

About The Smallpeice Trust
The Smallpeice Trust is an independent charitable trust which promotes engineering as a career, primarily through the provision of residential courses for young people aged 13 to 18.
The Smallpeice Trust was founded in 1966 by Dr Cosby Smallpeice, a pioneering engineer and inventor of the Smallpeice Lathe. Following the stock market flotation of his company Martonair, Dr Smallpeice invested his energy and part of his personal fortune to set up the Trust to ensure that British industry could continuously benefit from his proven design and engineering philosophies: “Simplicity in design, economy in production.”
The Trust is now governed by an eminent board of non-executive trustees and members from a diverse range of engineering, industry, educational and professional bodies.
In 2009/10, The Smallpeice Trust ran 30 residential courses for 1,700 school-aged students at universities across the country, with girls accounting for 38%. In addition, 15,977 students attended a Smallpeice in-school STEM masterclass.
A strong interface is maintained with industry, education and professional bodies that help to support, promote and develop the courses
