Riverview Medical Center Celebrates Five Years of CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery
Riverview continues to provide hope for patients with inaccessible or inoperable tumors.
Red Bank, NJ, February 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- In 2005, Riverview Medical Center became home to the one of the most revolutionary radiosurgical technologies in the world: the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System. It offers a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors in the brain, as well as other sites including prostate, lung, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney. The treatment – which delivers beams of radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy – offers new hope to patients worldwide. In its continuing mission to bring ground-breaking, preventative and life-saving treatment to patients, Riverview, part of Meridian Cancer Care, was among the first to bring the CyberKnife to the New York-New Jersey region. Riverview now stands as one of a limited number of medical facilities in the U.S. to host the CyberKnife System.
As a leader in the region, Meridian Cancer Care offers a complete range of services including screenings; diagnostics; medical, surgical, and radiation oncology treatment options; on-site cancer registry; and pre and post treatment support groups close to home.
"We celebrate this milestone with all of our patients and their families who have benefitted from this innovative technology," says Adnan F. Danish, M.D., radiation oncologist and medical director of the CyberKnife Center at Riverview Medical Center. "While conventional radiation therapy requires 20 to 40 treatments, the CyberKnife System requires only one to five treatments. And, while not for everyone, the CyberKnife is a tremendous option for many patients with a variety of cancers."
Vital stats:
* Over 900 patients to date have been treated with CyberKnife at Riverview Medical Center
* Over 3400 CyberKnife treatments have been performed to date at Riverview
* Over 150 prostate patients have been treated at Riverview Medical Center using CyberKnife
* In 2005, Riverview was only the 33rd Medical Center in the U.S. to acquire the CyberKnife - currently there are 132 in the U.S. and over 200 worldwide
* In 2008, the CyberKnife at Riverview Medical Center was ranked second in the world in usage for treating prostate cancer
"We look forward to Riverview continuing its role as an area leader in the treatment and advancement of stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy," says Danish. "Riverview's CyberKnife System is continually receiving substantial upgrades to the system allowing for more accurate radiation delivery and shorter treatment time. This is further evidence of Riverview's position as the leader in cancer care, services and resources in the region."
