North Las Vegas Tops Pinpoint Demographics’ 2011 List of Cities with the Largest Percentage of Youth Aged 19 and Under

Woolwich, ME, February 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- If you are looking to open a daycare center or shops that cater to teens, then North Las Vegas may be just the place you are looking for, according to new 2011 forecast data released by Pinpoint Demographics. That city tops a list the list of the top ten cities by percentage of youth, broken down by zip code.

This list includes children and teens aged 20 and younger. Other neighborhoods making the list include Hollywood, Fla., Moreno Valley, Calif., Gilbert, Ariz., and the Jordan neighborhood of Minneapolis, in second through fifth place, respectively.

Gilbert, Ariz. is the fourth fastest growing municipality in the United States according to 2009 U.S. Census data. The city made Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live top 100 lists in both 2007 and 2008, ranking 28th in 2008. Gilbert’s school system was ranked as the sixth best system in the nation for midsize U.S. cities by GreatSchools.org in 2010. The district has the highest number of national board certified teachers in Arizona. The strong school system and high quality of life attracts families with young children to the city.

Almost 55% of households in Draper, Utah, have children under 18 living with them. Draper was also listed in the top 100 of Money’s 2007 Best Places to Live.

Of the cities making the top ten list, most have a significant Hispanic presence. The city in first place, North Las Vegas, has almost a 99% Hispanic population. About 56% of its residents are younger than 20 years old.

Hollywood, Fla., has a smaller but still prominent Hispanic presence, making up about 22,000 out of 41,000 total residents, as does Moreno Valley, Calif., making up about 20,000 out of 30,000 residents. All of the neighborhoods in the top ten list reflect this pattern except for Gilbert, Ariz., Draper, Utah, and Minneapolis. The Jordan neighborhood in Minneapolis has a median age of 22.9 and is 46% African American. Moreno Valley is also attracting a sizeable percentage of African Americans to the town as they leave the Los Angeles area, according to 2008 U.S. Census data.

A January 2011 report issued by the Pew Research Center and the Pew Hispanic Center notes that Hispanics comprise about 50% of America’s population growth. “Using 2009 population estimates from the American Community Survey, Hispanics accounted for 51% of the nation’s population growth since the 2000 Census, which counted 281 million U.S. residents. From 2000 to 2010, the nation’s population grew 9.7%. From 2000 to 2009 (the last year available), the Hispanic population grew 37%.” The report cites that youth make up a significant portion of the total Hispanic population, “Among the nation’s 48.4 million Hispanics in 2009 . . . Some 15.5 million Hispanics are U.S. citizens 17 years of age or younger.”

One of the biggest challenges for these communities with such a high percentage of youth is ensuring adequate school capacity. Marsy Smith, with the Public Relations & Governmental Affairs Department of the Broward County Public Schools, the district in which Hollywood, Fla., is located, described how the public schools take their official count on the twentieth day. Because enrollment tends to fluctuate at the beginning of the term, schools wait twenty days to take the first official counts. These counts are important because these are the numbers used to calculate the need for aid, report racial demographics and other related issues. Smith noted that Broward County Schools have always had a large population, although it had been decreasing in recent years. “However, in 2009-2010, enrollment was up,” she said. Hollywood is located in between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, although it is considered part of the Fort Lauderdale area.
