San Diego Tops Pinpoint Demographics’ 2011 List of Lawyers Offices Per Capita
Woolwich, ME, February 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- If you need an attorney, you might want to head toward the coast. A neighborhood in San Diego, Calif., has the largest number of attorney offices per capita, according to new 2011 forecast data released by Pinpoint Demographics. Other cities placing in the top five, which have been broken down by zip codes, include Garden City, located on Long Island just outside of New York City, Miami, Fla., Midtown Manhattan, and Newport Beach, Calif.
It is easy to picture images of attorneys walking through downtown Manhattan or Los Angeles, both regions with two neighborhoods in the top ten, because these two cities are associated with business, contracts, and making deals, as represented by the long running television show, “L.A. Law.” Thus, San Diego and Miami’s appearances so high on the list may be a little more surprising to people who view these cities as more vacation than business destinations. However, both cities are major business centers as well as tourist meccas. For example, the eighth largest law firm in the United States, Greenberg Traurig, is headquartered in Miami, and specializes in advising “local, national and international companies in numerous industries and sectors, including aviation, entertainment, financial institutions, health care, international trade and customs, manufacturing, real estate, retail and technology,” according to their website.
The San Diego neighborhood that tops the list includes the marina, the San Diego international Airport, the San Diego Zoo, and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Dan Link, president of the San Diego County Bar Association offered several reasons why this location attracts attorneys. “San Diego’s proximity to the Mexico border, the large military presence in San Diego, and the many large corporations headquartered in San Diego are a few of the unique factors that contribute to the variety of legal work available.”
Attorneys may be opening shop in these neighborhoods for more reasons than just access to courthouses. Attorneys choose their office locations for reasons ranging from access to the law library at a large law school to client visibility to quality of life. Link confirmed that quality of life is an important factor, “While it is difficult to discern whether or not there is a greater need for access to legal services in San Diego than in other cities in California and the U.S., I believe that the quality of life afforded to practitioners in San Diego contributes to the number of legal professionals who choose to practice in San Diego or remain in San Diego following law school.”
Many attorneys choose to remain in the area where they went to law school, sometimes getting a job with a firm they clerked for while in law school or opening up their own practice. Both San Diego and greater Miami have three accredited law schools. Access to a large law library is also helpful for newer, smaller firms or solo practitioners who may not want to invest in their own law library when just starting out.
“San Diego has a thriving and dynamic legal community, providing opportunities for attorneys to practice in a large variety of areas. We have a legal climate that supports big firm practices, but is also ideally suited for small firms and solo practitioners to succeed,” said Link. In 2010, San Diego’s neighborhood had 796 attorney offices, which grossed about $763.2 million. These attorney offices employ roughly 6,500 people. In contrast, the attorney offices in fourth-place Midtown Manhattan number about 430, and employ almost 12,800 people, but they grossed more than $2 billion in 2010. This speaks to the different types of clients and cases attorneys handle in the heart of New York City than those in San Diego.
