Treasure Mountain Inn Wins Park City’s New "Environmental Hero" Award
Pioneering Eco-Boutique Recognized for Sustainable Business Practices
Park City, UT, February 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Treasure Mountain Inn, Park City’s only green-certified, 100% carbon neutral hotel, is the inaugural recipient of Park City Municipal’s new Environmental Heroes Award, a recognition of local leaders who are working hard to protect the natural environment in Park City and beyond. Andy Beerman and Thea Leonard, co-owners of Treasure Mountain Inn (TMI) , accepted the award from Park City Mayor Dana Williams during a recent City Council meeting.
In announcing the award, Mayor Williams congratulated Treasure Mountain Inn for its “long-standing example of environmental stewardship in our community. TMI has adopted green practices which extend far beyond day-to-day business operations and reflect a genuine concern for the future of our planet and the long-term sustainability of our environment.” The Mayor continued, “[Treasure Mountain Inn] is proof that doing good business can, and should, include doing what’s right for future generations as well.”
TMI is a member of the Green Hotels Association, is an EPA Green Power Partner, and was the first hotel to join 1% For the Planet. As a 1% member, TMI donates a minimum of 1% of its gross revenues to environmental organizations such as Conservation Alliance, Mountain Trails, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, Summit Land Conservancy, The Access Fund, Utah Open Lands, Utah Nature Conservancy, Utah Sierra Club, Utah Rivers Council and Vital Ground.
The Inn purchases Utah Power Blue Sky renewal energy credits for 100% of its electricity usage, and is the first hotel in Utah to go 100% carbon-neutral through carbon-reducing offsets. In 2009, the Inn installed a 4-kilowatt solar array to produce clean power on-site. As part of its energy efficiency upgrades, TMI has replaced hundreds of light fixtures and over 2000 light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs and fixtures, has installed waterless urinals in the Men’s bathroom (which saves at least 40,000 gallons of water annually), has installed installed water-conserving shower heads, faucets and toilets, plus has upgraded to high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. In 2006, the Inn replaced their aging pool and Jacuzzi with a therapy spa pool that uses an earth-friendly salinity system.
In addition, TMI has ongoing guest “behavior modification” efforts that begin with the reservation process. Due to TMI’s central location, guests are encouraged to leave their cars at home and take free public transportation, or use the new a morning ski shuttle that TMI added to supplement the free trolley/bus. TMI no longer provides bottled water to conferences unless it’s insisted upon; instead they offer filtered mountain water. They offer recycling in-room, in-hall and in-meeting, and take the extra step to sort garbage at the dumpster to catch what might have slipped through the cracks. As a result of their system-wide recycling efforts, TMI has been twice named Utah Business Recycler of the Year.
In its daily operations, TMI has practiced a “no paper” policy since 2003, using electronic marketing, banking, receipts, billings, and communications in place of printed paper. When paper is required, TMI uses only recycled paper. Naturally, The Inn’s business vehicle is a hybrid.
