Pacific Ridge School Students Recognized at 2011 Model United Nations Conference of the University of Chicago
More than 2,000 Students Meet to Advance Understanding of Politics and International Affairs; Carlsbad Students Take Home Five Delegate Awards.
Carlsbad, CA, February 20, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Approximately 2,100 students representing 120 schools from all over the world assembled February 3-6, at The Palmer House Hilton for the 2011 Model United Nations Conference of the University of Chicago (MUNUC). The Conference hosted a variety of high school student committees that spent the weekend conversing on conflicts, events and principal actors of the international arena. 17 students, accompanied by two faculty advisors, traveled to Chicago this year to represent Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad.
“We congratulate all of the students who participated in this year’s Model United Nations Conference,” said Scott Silk, history teacher, Pacific Ridge School. “The University of Chicago Conference is one of the biggest and most well-known conferences in the country. It was a great trip and our Pacific Ridge School students did an outstanding job at the conference. All of our delegates were active and engaged, demonstrating both professionalism and knowledge of the world. In addition to attending the conference, students toured the Art Institute of Chicago, strolled through Millennium Park, experienced the joy of real Chicago-style pizza, savored an authentic Persian meal, shopped on Michigan Avenue, and rode the Chicago El Train.”
To prepare for the conference, students researched and developed a position paper on each of the topics assigned to their committees. The conference’s closing ceremonies included the presentation of awards to the highest-scoring individuals and delegations. Five Pacific Ridge School students earned individual delegate awards for their respective committees, including:
Outstanding Delegate
· Janine Chow – Press Corps., El Universal
Best Delegates
Abby Perelman – Disarmament and International Security, Albania
Alex Rodrigues – Disarmament and International Security, Albania
Commendation Award
Meili Eubank – World Health Organization, Albania
Tristan Saggese – World Health Organization, Albania
