International Conference April 6 on Deteriorating Condition of Men and Boys

Edward M. Stephens, M.D., FMS founder and chair, notes that the conference provides a comprehensive approach to problems posed by the deteriorating status of men and boys in education, employment, mental and physical health, family structure and related areas. It will also, he said, focus on the effect of the negative factors on both genders and the presenters will offer suggested steps needed to reverse the negative trends.
The conference will deal with aspects of contemporary life, from advertising and education to medicine, psychology and sociology.
Co-chairs of the event are Marianne Legato, M.D., and Tom Mortenson.
Dr. Legato is founder and director of Columbia College of Medicine's Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine, editor of the first textbook on gender medicine, and founder of the journal, Gender Medicine. She also is the author of "Why Men Die First."
Mr. Mortenson is a senior scholar at the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education Higher Education and editor and publisher of Postsecondary Education Opportunity. He is the 2010 recipient of the Council for Opportunity in Education's Walter O. Mason Award. He will outline the males' decades-long shortfall in education and its resulting negative impact on male employment.
Other featured speakers at the conference and their topics are:
Gordon E. Finley, PhD, Professor of Psychology at Florida International University. His presentation will describe how emerging current realities and anticipated future trends will affect the role of fathers in families and children's lives.
Michael Gilbert, author of "The Disposable Male" and a senior fellow at the Annenberg Center for the Digital Future at the University of Southern California. He will speak on the current muddled state of gender affairs.
Dr. Paul Nathanson, PhD senior researcher, and Dr. Katherine Young, PhD, professor, both of the McGill University Faculty of Religious Studies. They have recently completed four-volume study of misandry, the hatred of men and boys. Their presentation will deal with the dilemma of males' lowered self-image.
Matthew Willcox and Matthew Palmer, both of DraftFCB, a global advertising firm. They will speak on the role of marketing and advertising on the self image and perception of males. Mr. Willcox is a director of strategic planning at the agency and Mr. Palmer is a vice-president and planning director. Mr. Willcox was instrumental in helping Levi Strauss and Co. brand Dockers develop its "Wear the Pants" campaign. Mr. Palmer is the lead strategist on the Miller Lite brand and a member of the team responsible for producing its "Man Up" campaign.
The conference moderator is award-winning journalist Guy Garcia, author of The Decline of Men. He is a former vice-president of AOL, and an authority on multicultural consumerism and socio-economic trends.
