Opening cocktail reception: Friday, March 4, 2011 5-8PM
Gallery KH is pleased to present Evoking Memory a new collection of abstract mixed media paintings by the artist Carolyn Cole. Evoking Memory opens March 4, 2011 through April 13, 2011. An opening night cocktail reception is scheduled for Friday, March 4, 5-8PM. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
“We are always so thrilled when a Carolyn Cole show comes up on the calendar. With a Carolyn Cole show, it is always a guarantee that the work will be bright, fresh, and lively. While Ms. Cole's work continues to evolve, we can always count on a lovely symphony of color in each piece. Some of her newer pieces have been more collage based and we are excited about this recent departure. We hope this show is as well received as her most recent exhibits,” states Kristen Hagan, Gallery KH Co-Founder.
The artwork of Portland, Oregon artist Carolyn Cole lingers between consciousness and intuition, combining emotional content, observation, technical skill, exploration, and reinvention. Cole is known for creating passionate surfaces that are visually intriguing and mysterious, with expressive colors and shapes.
Beginning each piece on canvas or paper, Cole paints on collaged papers over and over, continuing until a rich texture emerges. The collaged essentials under the painted surfaces feature acrylics, pencils, and charcoals, handwritten letters, old books, and used envelopes. Scraping the surface with a palette knife to reveal the layers underneath, Cole then paints into exposed areas. By building up layers of paint and collage, the paintings become infused with a cultural history, at the same time allowing the viewer to create a personal history.
