David Suder, CEO of KHS&S, Talks About Constructing a New Reality on the CEO Show with Robert Reiss

David Suder, CEO of KHS&S, talks on the CEO Show with Robert Reiss about how KHS&S, the largest thematic construction company in the U.S., constructs massive new reality exhibits and building interiors and exterior facades of an unprecedented scale. Suder explains how KHS&S uses a production line process to meet incredibly tight schedules and budgets, and describes the adoption of advanced construction technologies, sustainable building methods, and the KHS&S employee-owned business model.

Ridgefield, CT, February 27, 2011 --(PR.com)-- David Suder, President and CEO of KHS&S, talks on the CEO Show with Robert Reiss about how KHS&S, the largest thematic construction company in the U.S., constructs massive new reality exhibits and also building interiors and exterior facades of an unprecedented scale. KHS&S, a major player in building theme parks such as Disney World, is at the forefront of rapid construction and the creation of large scale building components using a production line concept.

Reiss asks Suder about working with Disney and he remarks, “Their attention to detail is greater than anybody we’ve worked for. They are very collaborative with us.” Disney also pushes to use “build faster, ... build less expensively, and … produce a higher quality product.” Thus it seems that Disney acts much like a professional sports coach, training an athlete for the season’s championship.

The interview with Suder also touches on the impact of technology on the production process. Technology has moved this specialized part of the construction industry from the era of 2D blueprints to today’s environment where concepts and instructions come in 3D without reliance on paper mache’ and wooden models. Use of 3D has had a highly positive effect on improving project coordination quality because “we actually can see the project in a 3D environment before we ever step foot on a project.” Suder supports his insight, explaining that in a relatively recent project there were 18,000 RIFs (Requests for Information to clarify something about a technical drawing), while in a more recent project of similar size, only 400 RIFs were submitted. The explanation that Suder offered was that the older project relied on 2D blueprints and the newer project used a 3D information delivery system.

Suder and Reiss proceed to talk about other fascinating topics such as the construction of the CityCenter in Las Vegas, the largest single privately funded project in the U.S. (about 19 million square feet of building space), the application of a European market initiative to construction more sustainable and “green”, and the value of the employee-owned business model that is at the core of success at KHS&S.
