"Im Not a Filmmaker, I Just Make Movies!"
Wow! Awesome! UNBELIEVEABLE! That's definitely what you'll be thinking after you view the new film, Independent Doin' Major Things, by Hotep aka "Hustle Simmons". This hop-hop hustler has carefully chronicled the Atlanta Renaissance, and taken the "how-to" of entering the entertainment business, and put it into an entertaining documentary! Definitely a must see film for ANYONE considering pursuit of any aspect of the entertainment industry!
Atlanta, GA, September 13, 2005 --(PR.com)-- Almost single-handedly, with no formal training or prior experience, the man many call “Hustle Simmons” has hit it big in the film industry. Hotep’s first movie, a documentary entitled “Independent, Doin’ Major Things” is quickly becoming a cult classic in Atlanta and is drawing the attention of distributors across the country.
“Independent, Doin’ Major Things” has already been compared to Fahrenheit 911 and Jay-Z’s Fade to Black. It captures what Hotep calls “The Atlanta Renaissance,” the incredible independent artist, entrepreneurial and cultural movements taking place in the city known as the Motown of the South. The film flows more like a reality show and music video than a documentary. The comedic, yet educational interludes like “The Hustler’s 10 Commandments” are a reminder that this filmmaker is something special.
“The idea to do a movie first hit me as a creative way to promote my music”, says Hotep. “I chose documentary-style because I knew the audience wouldn’t mind my technical flaws. What makes docs good is information, rawness and a compelling topic, not celebrity actors, special effects or film/ sound quality. In editing the film, I applied techniques that I would normally use in laying out an album. Once completed, I used promotional and marketing strategies commonly used by indie musicians. When it comes to hustlin’, the indie filmmaking community is about 2 years behind the indie music community.”
Hotep is the owner of SKINNYMEN PRODUCTIONS, a music production company turned multi-media Edu-tainment company. He is the writer, director, producer, editor and host of the documentary. If that weren’t enough, Hotep (a Morehouse college grad), currently teaches Kindergarten in the Dekalb county school system in Georgia. More than making music and movies, he enjoys touring as a guest motivational speaker/ panelist at conferences, conventions and youth organizations.
