Hayward, CA, March 03, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Angie Walters, Public Relations Chair for the California Association of Legal Document Assistants (CALDA) was recently featured in the Sacramento Bee last Sunday, February 27, 2011, discussing the LDA profession and how it benefits consumers seeking low cost alternatives to attorneys.

The article by Claudia Buck, Personal Finance Notebook columnist for the Bee, entitled, “Lower Cost Legal Help is Available,” describes LDAs as “a little-known slice of the legal world. Their business is helping people fill out and file legal documents, anything from adoptions to divorces to wills.”

Walters, who is also co-owner of ASAP Legal, Inc. based in Roseville, described the typical consumer who would solicit the services of Legal Document Assistants: “If their situation doesn't warrant an attorney or they don't need legal advice … if it's just filling out the paperwork professionally and accurately by someone who understands the court processes, that's us.”

Buck’s article adds: “LDAs may be most useful for "self-help" individuals, those with some familiarity with the legal documents they need but who may be somewhat unsure about terminology or court processes. LDAs also can provide copies of various legal forms, such as divorce papers, trust deeds, guardianships, etc.”

“Ms. Buck’s article published by a respected newspaper like the Sacramento Bee was a major breakthrough for the Legal Document Assistant profession,” said Marcel Neumann, president of CALDA and owner of Affordable Document Preparation Services of Hayward. “We are also grateful to Angie Walters for her accurate and knowledgeable representation of LDAs based on her 25 years of experience and success in this profession.”

Walters said she was excited to have participated in the Sacramento Bee story. “I am proud to be representing CALDA. It’s a time-honored organization of 25 years. We are the only LDA organization approved to provide MCLE/CLE credit by the State Bar of California. Our seminars meet the standard for mandatory continuing legal education for LDAS, attorneys and paralegals.

“CALDA members benefit greatly with what CALDA offers, including continuing educational legal seminars and information on how to market and promote their businesses. CALDA regularly evaluates its programs and pays close attention to the feedback of its members. And as a further benefit, our Board of Directors have years of experience in the legal field and running LDA businesses, and will readily share their expertise with its members. Not to mention the benefit of networking with all the members!”

Neumann also posted additional information and clarification about LDAs in the “comments” section after the article:

This is what a Legal Document Assistant (LDA) can do:

Complete legal documents in a ministerial manner, selected by a person who is representing himself or herself in a legal matter, by typing or otherwise completing the documents at the person's specific direction.

Provide general published factual information that has been written or approved by an attorney, pertaining to legal procedures, rights, or obligations to a person who is representing himself or herself in a legal matter, to assist the person in representing himself or herself.

Make published legal documents available to a person who is representing himself or herself in a legal matter.

File and serve legal forms and documents at the specific direction of a person who is representing himself or herself in a legal matter.
