Live Video Security System Catches Marine Yard Thief

Fort Lauderdale, FL, March 04, 2011 --(PR.com)-- South Florida’s marine companies keep high-value inventory on hand to service the “Yachting Capital of the World,” and that makes them particularly vulnerable to theft. One Fort Lauderdale company, however, is fighting back with real-time Sonitrol video.

Thanks to a high-tech Sonitrol security system and quick police response, Fort Lauderdale-based Florida Marine Propulsion was able to foil the early morning theft of costly propellers on Feb. 19.

Cutting the fence just before 5 a.m., a thief walked across Florida Marine Propulsion’s storage yard, which is protected by a Sonitrol SonaVision video intrusion security system. His movement interrupted an invisible beam, triggering a video camera. Sonitrol’s central monitoring staff watched live video of the intruder moving through the yard and immediately alerted Fort Lauderdale Police that an incident was underway.

With the intrusion already verified, police officers were dispatched immediately and arrived within five minutes of the alarm. The thief was gone, but minutes later police found two men nearby in a pickup truck with two propellers from Florida Marine Propulsion loaded in the back. The men were taken into custody, and charges have been filed.

“High tech security systems are critical to South Florida’s marine companies, whose valuable inventory often makes them prime targets for crime,” said John Ray, III, president of Sonitrol of Fort Lauderdale. “In the marine industry, large outdoor storage yards can be especially vulnerable.”

The SonaVision system’s next-generation technology detects intrusions and uses live video images to confirm that a crime is underway, he explained. That certainty helps police respond faster and with the right resources. The crime-scene video is also admissible as evidence in court, Ray added.
