Outskirts Press Announces the Publication of Nathan Augustus Monroe Dudley, 1825 - 1910, the Latest Highly-Anticipated Work from Santa Fe, NM Author E. Donald Kaye
Lt. Col. Dudley, 9th U.S. Cavalry, in 1878 did not appear by magic, or parachute into Lincoln County, New Mexico to cause problems and then disappear. He had a life before and after the Lincoln County War.
Denver, CO, February 18, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Nathan Dudley was a complicated man. He was very fond of himself. One of his compatriots said he was “an ass,” some said he was a drunk. But he became a brave and experienced combat commander, though often he didn’t get along with his fellow officers. Some called him “Gold Lace Dudley” during the Civil War, over the course of which he received three regular army brevet promotions. Later, he accepted the position of Lt. Colonel of the 9th Cavalry, a posting that Custer had earlier rejected because the 9th was composed of black troops. It was during this time that Dudley became involved in the Lincoln County War, along with Billy the Kid, and behind the scenes, Thomas Catron who later would become one of New Mexico’s first two U.S. senators. Dudley retired as Colonel of the First Cavalry, the same position from which Robert E. Lee years before had resigned in order to accept a commission in the Confederate Army.
Dudley reached the rank of Colonel in the regular army despite two General Court Martial convictions, and despite the efforts of some to get him booted from the service. His advantage was the seniority system of promotion, and his “friends in high places,” including General Sherman, who knew of his service during the Civil War. After his retirement he was promoted to Brigadier General. His remains are in Arlington Cemetery under a tombstone of his own design.
