Rochester, New York Veterans Have New Option for Companion Pet Adoption

Not-for-profit partners with Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester and Henrietta Animal Hospital to help U.S. veterans honorably adopt and care for companion pets.

Rochester, NY, March 18, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects shelter pets with service and veteran members of the United States military, is partnering with Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester to place hard-to-adopt dogs and cats into loving military homes. Henrietta Animal Hospital will offer discounted veterinary care to animals adopted through the Pets for Patriots program.

“We are pleased to partner with Pets for Patriots to bring a special group of pets and people together,” said Alice Calabrese, CAWA, president and CEO of Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester. “This targeted program will help adoptable animals in our community who may sometimes be overlooked because of their size, age or medical needs. By matching pets in need with veterans, we are able to honor those who have bravely served our country with the proven emotional and physical health benefits of sharing one’s life with a pet.”

Henrietta Animal Hospital will extend an ongoing 10% discount off all veterinary fees for any pet adopted through the Pets for Patriots program. To reduce the costs of purchasing pet food, supplies, toys and other essentials, the charity provides direct financial support to veterans who join its program and honorably adopt eligible pets from Lollypop Farm.

Individuals are welcome from all United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers: active, reserve, retired or veteran, as well as those transitioning to civilian life. Eligible pets must meet one of three criteria: an adult dog or cat (two years and older), dogs over 40 pounds regardless of age, or special needs dogs and cats. Joining Pets for Patriots is entirely free to veterans.

“We’re delighted to have Lollypop Farm as our adoption partner; their longstanding history in the community and dedication to the humane treatment of animals are legendary,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “We encourage all veterans in the greater Rochester community to experience the unique joys of companion pet adoption and the benefits of joining our free program, including high-quality, discounted veterinary care and financial assistance to make pet food, supplies and basics more affordable.”

Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service or honorable discharge. Approval typically takes a day or two, after which veterans can visit the adoption specialists at Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester for assistance in choosing their new best friend, and Henrietta Animal Hospital for high-quality, reduced cost veterinary care.
