Derby College Hosts Building Challenge

Staff from major builders and plumbers merchants from throughout the UK took part in a building challenge at Derby College.

Derby, United Kingdom, March 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Staff from major builders and plumbers merchants from throughout the UK took part in a building challenge recently, organised by the Institute of Builders Merchants.

Thirty six staff from nine companies took part in the challenge day at Derby College’s Johnson Building in Pride Park where they were set tasks to complete including bricklaying, plastering, painting and plumbing. The overall winners was the team of four from Ridgeons of Cambridge.

The annual event is organised to enable sales staff at major companies to gain hands on experience with some of the products that they sell on a daily basis and therefore provide more detailed advice to customers.

Glyn Stenson, Assistant Principal in charge of construction at Derby College, said: “The challenge day was a huge success and we were very honoured to be hosting such a well attended event.

“As well as supporting the various teams with their tasks, it was also an excellent opportunity for the College construction staff to gain valuable feedback from industry professionals and employers about the skills they want from young people and apprentices to improve and adapt the training that we provide.”

Andrew Pine, President of the Institute of Builders Merchants added: “The Institute was impressed with the college’s facilities and very pleased with the quality of the instructors. Our participants had a very instructive and productive day, and we would hope to strengthen our relationship with Derby College as we aim to hold further events of this type.”
