Kenya’s Utility CEO Edward Njoroge Honoured at African Utility Week
The CEO of the Kenyan Generation Company, KenGen, Edward Njoroge, was named utility CEO of the Year at the annual African Utility Week at the CTICC in Cape Town this week.
Cape Town, South Africa, March 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The South African minister of Energy, Elisabeth Dipuo Peters, and Eskom CEO Brain Dames were among the top power professionals from the continent and further afield that addressed Africa’s largest utility and power event.
African Utility Week project director Claire Volkwyn says the award recognises the KenGen CEO Edward Njoroge’s significant contribution to the Kenyan community, the utility industry in the East African region as well as his leadership style and vision. Says Claire Volkwyn: “Edward Njoroge has led KenGen through a public listing on the Nairobi Stock Exchange, he is the board member of several companies in East Africa, the chairman of the World Energy Council, Kenyan Chapter and the President of the Union of Producers, Transporters and Distributors of Electric Power in Africa (UPDEA).”
Itron wins prestigious metering award
Global metering giant Itron was awarded the Metering International Excellence Award which was accepted by Damian Padachi, Managing Director of Itron Southern and Eastern Africa. African Utility Week’s Claire Volkwyn states: “Itron has a number of noteworthy projects including a real time prepaid vending solution for about 4.5 million Eskom customers, which is the largest prepayment vending system in the world; as well as a prepayment project in Mozambique which expanded the solutions across the vending value chain.”
Renewable focus
About 250 industry experts were featured before some 2000 attendees from around 50 countries at African Utility Week this week while more than 135 companies exhibited their products and services for the power and utilities industry.
Three of the five top wind power companies in the world, Goldwind, Suzlon and Vestas, joined the wind rush at the event in what is clearly a huge surge in interest in foreign investment in renewable energy in South Africa and the continent.
The event ended on Wednesday. The next African Utility Week is planned for 21-24 May next year in Johannesburg.
