Turkish Boutique on Datҫa Peninsula Now Available Over Easter
Turkey specialist, Exclusive Escapes’ newest addition – Mehmet Ali Aga Mansion on the Datҫa Peninsula– has just announced it will be opening early for the season from April 16th. New to Exclusive Escapes programme for 2011, Mehmet Ali Aga Mansion is situated on the south western tip of the Lycian Coast where the Mediterranean and Aegean seas meet. This area called the Datҫa Peninsula remains one of the most uncommercial stretches of Turkish coastline, characterised by unspoilt villages, beautiful coves and an abundance of history. At the tip of the peninsula lies the Hellenistic site of Knidos – an open-air museum where the ruins lie as they fell - which visitors can amble over at their leisure. The site overlooks a natural harbour where visitors can pause for a thirst quenching drink or plate of fresh meze at the single lonkanta on the sea shore.
Beyond the harbour town at Datҫa, there is very little tourism and a warm welcome from those living in the villages dotted along the windy roads. The Peninsula is best explored by car or bicycle, and there is also some walking in the mountain ranges which straddle the peninsula. April is an ideal month to travel, as the sea is warm enough to swim in yet the sun less intense than at the height of summer.
Mehmet Ali Aga Mansion is an 18-bed boutique hotel that has been painstakingly restored from Ottoman times (dating back to 1809), with lush, rambling gardens. The Mansion House bedrooms stay true to the original design with carefully restored woodwork, frescoes and engravings, while the Stone Rooms have neutral tones and a more contemporary feel. The walled property is set in the working village of Resadiye with views up to the mountains beyond. It boasts a freshwater pool with a large terrace, wood-fired Turkish Baths and many shaded alcoves in which to relax.
The hotel’s Elaki restaurant serves traditional Turkish cuisine prepared only from fresh, own-grown produce. Home made rosewater and hand made almond sweets are some of the exquisite treats on offer.
