New York, NY, March 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- On April 1, 2011, College For Every Student (CFES), a nonprofit organization committed to helping underserved youth prepare for, gain access to, and succeed in college, launches The Hall Pass Tour with its first public school concert at Global Technology Preparatory in East Harlem, NY. The Hall Pass Tour is a series of after-school concerts designed to support the advancement of education through music, and offer a creative space for communities to support their youth.
CFES has teamed up with four young change agents from New York - two college attendees and two college graduates - to spearhead the tour in conveying the achievability of college for all students. The team includes: Janelle j.RENEÉ Bechdol (headlining singer), Jamal ScienZe Monsanto (headlining emcee), Michael DJ Kraff Swagger Lawrence (tour DJ), and Holley Holley Monelle Murchison (tour manager and host).
“The purpose of the Hall Pass Tour is to encourage kids to aspire to higher education through music,” said Ms. Bechdol.
The pilot tour will take place at five New York City schools that participate with CFES:
Fri, April 1 - Global Technology Preparatory
Wed, April 6 - Richard R. Green High School of Teaching
Fri, April 8 - Paul Robeson High School for Business and Technology
Wed, April 13 - Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing & Visual Arts
Thu, April 14 - M.S. 45/S.T.A.R.S. Prep Academy
Each school has hosted auditions where students had the opportunity to try out for three available roles for the concert at their school: as an opening act; co-host; or co-DJ.
In addition to the performance aspect, chosen students will be charged with the task of sharing their ambitions, college and career goals throughout the concerts. Giveaways supplied by sponsors will be awarded throughout the shows and special awards will be given to top performing students and faculty at each school.
In addition to CFES, the tour sponsors include:
Apt No.7
Boundless NY
Scratch DJ Academy
Staple | Reed Space
Upon completion of the pilot, The Hall Pass Tour is set to take on CFES schools in the rural regions of upstate New York toward the end of the 2010 - 2011 school year and will continue expanding throughout the country during the 2011 – 2012 school year.
“Our communities are plagued with statements that begin with if. If I apply to college. If I’m accepted,” said Ms. Murchison. “We want students to leave these concerts feeling empowered enough to change those statements to when. When I apply to college. When I get in. And they will.”
