John Doerr to Speak at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2011 Leukemia Cup Regatta VIP Dinner
San Francisco, CA, March 24, 2011 --(PR.com)-- At a dinner event to signal the start of the 2011 fundraising effort for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS’s) annual Leukemia Cup Regatta, held at the The San Francisco Yacht Club (SFYC) last weekend, legendary venture capitalist and Leukemia Cup Honorary Chairman, Tom Perkins, who serves on the America’s Cup Organizing Committee (ACOC), announced the October 1st Leukemia Cup VIP Dinner guest speaker will be John Doerr, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB).
The San Francisco Leukemia Cup Regatta has raised a total of $2.5 million and continues to be the top charity regatta in the country supporting LLS’s mission to find a cure for blood cancers and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Hundreds of sailors from all over the Bay Area are expected to participate and raise their sails in honor of blood cancer patients and survivors, or “honorary skippers,” who give real inspiration to the sailors who support this important cause.
“John is a long time member of The San Francisco Yacht Club and owner of a beautiful 1939 yacht that I previously owned, Copperhead, a Rhodes 48’,” Perkins said. “His yacht will be on display during the Leukemia Cup Regatta weekend on October 1-2 at the SFYC.” In 1980 John joined KPCB and sponsored a series of investments including Compaq, Cypress, Intuit, Netscape, Lotus, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, S3, Sun Microsystems, Amazon.com, Symantec and Google. John was the founding CEO of Silicon Compilers. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Google. His privately-held company board seats include Miasole and Bloom Energy.
The Leukemia Cup Regatta’s National Chairman and US SAILING President, Gary Jobson, a guest speaker at the dinner, shared his own personal story of facing the challenges of a lymphoma diagnosis in 2003. Jobson is well known in the sailing community as a respected ESPN commentator, noted author, an America’s Cup champion and lymphoma survivor who generously commits his time to giving back to LLS.
“Over the past 19 years, LLS’s Leukemia Cup Regatta has grown into the largest and one of the most important charity events in the United States,” Jobson said. “Collectively the sailing community has raised nearly $35 million since we started in 1993. This money has been put to excellent use for lifesaving cancer research and to help patients like me.”
