Nancy Lieberman to Host Basketball Demo at YES! Expo
Lieberman will be on site from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. signing autographs and speaking to the crowd about the importance of youth sports.
Plano, TX, February 24, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Hall of Famer and ESPN Analyst, Nancy Lieberman, will host a basketball demo on Saturday, Feb. 24 at The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano for the inaugural YES! (Youth Explore Sports) Expo. The event is free to the public and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. the expo provides parents, and their kids, with an opportunity to learn more about the various programs, techniques, equipment, safety concerns and social/teamwork skills garnered through sport participation.
Lieberman will be on site from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. signing autographs and speaking to the crowd about the importance of youth sports. Lieberman is an accomplished basketball player, coach, mother, two-time Olympian, broadcaster and writer. She is one of the most recognized individuals in the history of women’s basketball.
About YES!: YES! provides the young people of Collin County an introduction to the people, sports and healthy activities that are offered by organizations in our North Texas community. Public, private, competitive, recreational and individual sport organizations are invited to participate in the Expo.
Who is Nancy Lieberman: Nancy Lieberman was the first two-time winner of the prestigious Wade Trophy at Old Dominion, a national "player of the year" award in college women's basketball, and was selected as the Broderick Award winner for basketball as the top women's player in America. The Queens, New York, native, also won three consecutive Kodak All-America awards (1978,'79,'80).
At the professional level, Lieberman played for several basketball teams and leagues, including the Dallas Diamonds of the Women's Pro Basketball League (WBL), eventually the WABA, where she led the team to the 1984 WABA Championship. She led in scoring and won the league’s MVP award. In 1986, Lieberman became the first women ever to play in a men's league called the United States Basketball League Springfield Fame (USBL), and also with the Washington Generals.
She was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 1996 and to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
In January 1997, Lieberman was drafted in the inaugural season by the Women's National Basketball Association's (WNBA), for the Phoenix Mercury, at the age of 38.
Lieberman has provided commentary for ABC, ESPN, NBC, and has been a contributing writer to the Dallas Morning News, the New York Times and USA Today. She is currently a full-time analyst with ESPN for men's and women's college basketball and both the men's (NBA) and women's (WNBA) National Basketball Association's development leagues. During the summer, she coaches women basketball camps in Dallas, Detroit, and Phoenix.
