Four-Legged "Waifs" in Kansas City Seek Second Chance at Life: with Veterans

Pets for Patriots, Wayside Waifs and Rockhill Pet Clinic to help Kansas City veterans honorably adopt and care for companion pets.

Kansas City, MO, April 01, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects shelter pets with service and veteran members of the United States military, is joining forces with Wayside Waifs in Kansas City to place hard-to-adopt dogs and cats into loving military homes. Rockhill Pet Clinic will offer ongoing, discounted veterinary care to animals adopted through the charitable program.

“Wayside Waifs is honored to be the first animal shelter in the Kansas City community to join the Pets for Patriots program,” says Cynthia Smith, President. “Research shows that pet ownership is therapeutic, and pets greatly reduce stress levels in humans.”

To help make quality pet care more affordable for military members, Rockhill Pet Clinic in Kansas City will extend an ongoing 10% discount off all veterinary fees for any pet adopted through the Pets for Patriots program. To reduce the costs of purchasing pet food, supplies, toys and other essentials, the charity provides direct financial support to veterans who join its program and honorably adopt eligible pets from Wayside Waifs.

Dr. Patricia Stewart, veterinarian and owner of Rockhill Pet Clinic, recognized the value of becoming one of the charity’s veterinary partners. “It is a pleasure and a privilege to be able to help animals in need and to help the brave and committed members of the military who sacrifice so much because of their dedication in service to our country.”

Individuals are welcome from all United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers. Eligible pets must meet one of three criteria: dog or cat two years and older, dogs over 40 pounds regardless of age, or special needs dogs and cats. Joining Pets for Patriots is entirely free to veterans.

“We’re proud to have Wayside Waifs and Rockhill Pet Clinic and as our first partners in the Kanasas City area, both of which share our dedication to local veterans and the city’s most at-risk shelter pets,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots, adding, “With their help, we can achieve our mission of giving the gifts of fidelity, joy and companionship to both pet and person.”

Smith notes some of the health benefits of having pets. “Research shows that pet ownership is therapeutic, and pets greatly reduce the stress levels in humans,” she says. “It is our hope that our Waifs adopted through the Pets for Patriots program can be personal heroes to our military veterans who have bravely served our country.”

Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service or honorable discharge. Approval typically takes a day or two, after which veterans can visit the adoption specialists at Wayside Waifs for assistance in choosing their new best friend, and Rockhill Pet Clinic for high-quality, reduced cost veterinary care.
