Livedrive Invents Way to Store Data on Paper, 2mb on a Single Sheet of A2
Leading cloud storage & backup company Livedrive announces new, third tier, level of protection for customer’s data.
London, United Kingdom, April 03, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Livedrive has announced its use of innovate, unique, patent-pending technology that backs up customer’s digital data by printing it onto A2 paper.
Like most online storage providers, Livedrive stores data in multiple data centres on multiple servers across the globe. The company has today announced it’s new third tier level of protection which involves actually printing customer data onto paper and storing it in a secure facility in a secret location in the UK.
Andrew Michael, Livedrive’s CEO said today: “This extra level of protection ensures customer data is safe even in the event of an electromagnetic pulse event triggered by a nuclear attack. We can store petabytes of data, with no degradation over time and no requirement for expensive power charges – while also keeping it safe from extreme events that other forms of backup would not survive.”
The technology, pioneered over many years by Livedrive involves the use of new "QT"style barcodes to store customer data in an encrypted form which is then printed onto physical sheets of paper and stored in a secure facility. Data can then be restored by scanning the barcodes to restore customer’s data in the event of a failure.
Dr Mike Wittner commented: “Customer data is first encrypted and then split into many different barcodes. So, for example, a photo could be split into thousands of barcodes, stored across many different sheets of paper within our library. This distributed, encrypted approach means the data is more secure than ever.”
Livedrive are also taking steps to protect the environmental impact of the new storage methodology, as Andrew explains, “We are extremely conscious of our impact on the environment – and concern for the rainforests was top of our list when we were researching the new technology. We have over 4 billion sheets of paper in our datacentre already, but all of our paper – every single piece – comes from renewable forest. None of it comes from rainforests, deciduous forest or any other form of protected source. And for every tree we use, we plant two more.”
