Vincent Roa Accepted at George Washington University's Internationally Acclaimed ACTiVATE program
Program Empowers Mid-Career Women to Launch Technology-Based Companies.
Rockville, MD, April 08, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Donna Vincent Roa, Managing Partner & Chief Strategist at Vincent Roa Group, a Maryland-based business communication firm, has been accepted at George Washington University’s internationally acclaimed ACTiVATE program which helps women entrepreneurs create technology-based start-up companies.
The year-long program is geared toward mid-career women who want to launch and run their own companies in fields such as biotechnology, medical application, information technology, services and consulting.
ACTiVATE is an applied program and growing national community through which instructors provide participants with access to a number of entrepreneurial tools, including expert panelists, potential investors, local supporting service providers and mentors. Participants who are selected through a competitive screening process are guided through the technology commercialization process and how to mine intellectual property found at universities and government laboratories to create competitive advantage and differentiation in their businesses.
Renee Lewis, co-founder of the nonprofit Path Forward Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which is the home of the ACTiVATE program, acts as a catalyst of economic change by activating women to build their Business Beyond One™ and leads the program at GW’s Ashburn, VA Science and Technology Campus. Lewis has held senior-level executive positions in several technology-based start-ups over the past 25 years.
“We’re excited to work with GW’s Office of Entrepreneurship and the Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence to bring the ACTiVATE program to northern Virginia. We’re also thrilled with the response from local service providers and sponsors within the local community who want to help advance the women and their businesses,” explains Lewis.
The ACTiVATE program was created in 2005 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Originally funded by the National Science Foundation’s Partnerships for Innovation program, ACTiVATE has received national and international recognition, and has been cited as one of three Good Practice programs by FemStart, a multi-country EU project.
“I am delighted to part of GW’s inaugural class of outstanding women from the DC Metro area and plan to capitalize on this experience to identify a water or energy technology that directly benefits people, doesn't harm the environment, and is the basis for profitable corporation that has a material, positive impact on society and the environment,” notes Vincent Roa.
Since the start of ACTiVATE, more than 130 participants have graduated, launching over 35 companies. These companies generate a number of high-quality jobs, and provide a steady stream of income taxes to states and local governments.
Dr. Roa is an experienced professional who builds best-in-class communication portfolios. She is a leading strategist in science, environment and sustainability communication, as well as a business communication process expert who re-engineers the way organizations communicate. She serves as an Environment Commissioner for the City of Rockville, and was most recently the Public Affairs Director and Director of Science Communication at the US Environmental Protection Agency and an environmental communication consultant for UNICEF/Sanitation and Water for All.
