Peter Spinogatti Busted Multiple Marriage Myths with Donna Marie Thompson, PhD, the CEO of Goals in Action, LLC on the Bouncing Back Now TV Show on RCRN
Washington, DC, April 13, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Peter Spinogatti, author, psychotherapist, and coach in New York City shared his provocative theories on relationships with Donna Marie Thompson, PhD on the Bouncing Back Now Show on the Real Coaching Radio TV Network.
Spinogatti is a marriage counselor and coach with more than 30 years of experience and lots of interesting stories to share. On the show, he showcased the book “Explaining Unhappiness - Dissolving the Paradox” that helps clients to understand exactly which parts of themselves, and subsequently their relationships, to focus on to clear blocks.
Busting the Myths
Spinogatti highlighted that: "We should not be working on self-improvement but instead on self- acceptance. We should not be getting in touch with our feelings but instead we should be getting in touch with our beliefs. We should not be working on anger management but instead on anger termination. We should not be working on letting it all hang out but instead getting to what is the root cause of the disturbance itself. We should not be coping with our situation instead we should be choosing to feel good about it. We should not be managing our lives with discipline but instead we should be making conscious, purposeful, and beneficial choices."
Spinogatti discussed the essential concept of core values which form the foundation of marriage and relationships. "What happens when we can successfully articulate what we want as individuals – and at the same time -- be cognizant of what our love wants as well - that is the key to a happy marriage. As long as each of the pair thinks about themselves in the context of the couple, things can be worked out amicably. In fact, it happens many times a day."
The Cautions
Spinogatti cautioned that: "There is no room for jealousy in a healthy marriage or relationship. Jealously is a sign of our own weakness and insecurity. The person whom we are threatened by has been given our power because in some dimension we feel inferior to them. The spouse who is on the receiving end of the jealousy spends a lot of time denying things that they did not even do; thus jealousy is a major reason why relationships fail. If we are secure in ourselves, we will end jealousy. Solid relationships are built upon working together to find the right answer at the right time. Removing jealousy can save a marriage."
Dr. Thompson added that: "Relationships and marriages need to be open and accommodating as life changes. Moving to a new city or starting up a major degree program affect the entire family. Each person’s needs as well as the tradeoffs are important if the couple is to have to chance at a long and healthy relationship or marriage."
