Head of Grauer School Embarks on Educational Sabbatical

After 20 years of uninterrupted service, Dr. Grauer will journey on a professional and institutional development sabbatical for five months commencing at the conclusion of the spring semester, 2011

Encinitas, CA, April 11, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Board of Directors of The Grauer School is proud to announce it has granted a sabbatical for its founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer. After 20 years of uninterrupted service, Dr. Grauer will journey on a professional and institutional development sabbatical for five months commencing at the conclusion of the spring semester, 2011. Dr. Grauer will be conducting research, writing and exploring the “small schools movement” nationwide in preparation for the organizational advancement of the school and the development of its capital campaign.

“We consider Dr. Grauer’s much anticipated sabbatical a testament to the administrative stability and academic depth of our school,” notes David C. Meyer, Chairman of Board. “Both staff and board members have made preparations to assure a seamless transition and the ongoing integrity of the school during Dr. Grauer’s absence. We look forward with great anticipation to the implementation of our long-term goals upon his return. His feedback and research from the field will be invaluable. During his sabbatical, our dedicated staff will be given the opportunity to exercise their leadership skills and uphold our small college preparatory school values.”

Two decades ago, Dr. Grauer founded the school in Encinitas, the very first of its kind in coastal North County. Today, the school enrolls 150 students in grades six through 12, graduates approximately 20 seniors annually and employs over 35 teachers who offer 130 courses. Under the leadership of Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs, Grauer became the only UNESCO affiliate school in the region in 2010, further distinguishing it as a Center of Innovation. A pioneer in the growing “small schools movement,” Dr. Grauer recently founded the Coalition of Small Preparatory Schools (CSPS). This organization will serve as a leadership catalyst for improving small school educational concepts and procedures worldwide. Dr. Grauer notes, “After 20 consecutive years of successful growth at the school, the sabbatical will provide me with the opportunity to study educational philosophy and great teachers in a wide variety of settings. In turn, I will be well equipped to establish a clear vision for our school as it embarks upon its next 20 years.”

The Grauer School is an independent grades 6-12 college preparatory day school; its students commit several thousand hours to humanitarian and ecological service annually, locally and globally. Grauer is renowned for its academic balance and a record of consistently surpassing other schools in scholarships offered to its graduating seniors.
