Columbia, SC, April 16, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Samurai Karate Studio is hosting a Free self defense workshop for women, on Thursday, April 21st, starting at 7:30pm.
"Domestic violence is a very important topic in South Carolina and it's important to me that I offer these workshops as a way to empower as many women as I can," commented Sensei Chris Feldt, the owner and chief instructor for Samurai Karate Studio.
The workshop, which will last approximately 1.5 hours, covers domestic violence statistics, reasons why women get assaulted, the power of your voice, the importance of body language, common every day weapons, what happens to the body under duress, the "survival mindset," and attack indicators.
"The first part of my workshop shares more class room kind of material," stated Feldt, "It's important for women to understand there is a lot they can do to protect themselves that does not include kicking and punching as they travel about town."
The second half of the seminar includes specific strategies to defend against front and rear chokes, bear hugs, hair pulls and wrist releases. Included in the "on the mat" training is learning attack points, how to create a good strong stance, how to strike and kick effectively.
Judy Magliane, a participant from one of Samurai Karate Studio's earlier workshops commented, "The self defense workshop presented by Sensei Feldt was an amazing experience! Not only did I learn about how to be aware of my surroundings, but I also appreciated the hands on mat work. Everyone always talks about how to be safe but it's another need to feel confident that you have a better understanding of how to protect yourself. Leaving this workshop, I will be walking taller, more confident and excited with what I have learned with my daughter. Thank you Sensei Feldt!"
While the workshop is Free, Sensei Feldt is asking for toiletry donations to help support a local shelter in town that is providing showers and free laundry care to the homeless in Columbia.
Samurai Karate Studio, located in Columbia, South Carolina in Richland Northeast, teaches a traditional style of Japanese karate to both children and adults, beginning at ages 4 and up.
In addition to their traditional karate program, Samurai Karate Studio currently offers a personal protection class, that runs Mondays and Tuesdays from 7:30pm to 8:15pm; that focuses exclusively on self defense on the street as well as getting into good physical shape.
