Appel Farm Arts Camp Announces New Staff Training Program to Deal with Bullying

The Appel Farm Arts Camp has instituted a new training program for staff members that will help them defuse bullying and other behaviors that may be hurtful to other children. The arts camp's philosophy encompasses a clearly articulated policy that promotes respect and celebrates diversity, and staff members will benefit from targeted strategies.

Elmer, NJ, April 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Parents sending their children to sleep-away camp for the first time often voice concerns about what their child will experience in a new place. Appel Farm Arts Camp in southern New Jersey has built a reputation for being a welcoming place where young people with an interest in the arts go to build their artistic skills along with their self-esteem, and to share in the fun of a summer with those who have the same interests. In order to achieve the best possible experience for campers and staff alike, Appel Farm Arts Camp implements a week-long staff training for staff that addresses a variety of situations that may arise, including bullying behavior.

Staff and campers come from around the globe to attend the acclaimed camp, founded over 50 years ago. The camp philosophy is one of acceptance and respect for all, and the camp policy is clear when it comes to anti-social behavior: “We are proactive in training our staff in how to work with social issues,” said Cori Solomon, Camp Director. “We are very serious about creating an environment that is safe and fun for our campers, and that means zero tolerance for bullying, or any other behavior that is hurtful.”

Camp directors and staff create a positive environment, and policies are stated clearly from the start of the camp season. Respect and caring are also key components for success. Appel Farm has always had a philosophy of hiring mature summer staff, and many return year after year. The continuity helps to bring new staff members greater understanding of the Appel Farm Arts Camp policies and philosophy. Intervention strategies are discussed during pre-camp training, and staff meetings are held weekly during the camp season. Camp Directors Cori Solomon and Jennie Quinn are always available for consultation with staff members who are in need of guidance in handling situations that may arise.

“Campers should feel secure that they will always be respected, and parents should feel confident their children are being cared for,” stated Solomon. “Appel Farm Arts Camp is a place of creativity and support.”
