EU Project BlogForever Shows Relevancy of Blogs

EU to shift blogs in the focus of digital preservation

Berlin, Germany, April 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- An EU funded consortium has invited blog provider, mokono to assist in developing a digital preservation technology to preserve content published via blogs. Blogs have changed the online media landscape and are used across the globe by several hundred million people to publish content online. With continuously more content being published on blogs only, much of the content stands the risk of being deleted just as easily. The EU project BlogForever aims to provide preservation technology in order to enable institutions and citizens to preserve content for future generations.

BlogForever is a collaborative EU funded project which is going to develop robust digital preservation, management and dissemination facilities for blogs. Ilias Trochidis, Researcher and IT Project manager at Tero Ltd. coordinates the project: “BlogForever will create a platform capable of aggregating and preserving blogs. Any user or organization will be able to use the BlogForever software and guidelines to create a digital repository containing their own selection of blogs.”

Among the partners are CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research and the Universities of Glasgow, London and Warwick as well as the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. mokono's role in this project will be not only create, implement and analyse the new technology among the bloggers of the own blog network. mokono will also provide the partners with the full knowledge a blog provider and blog marketer can give about blog technology and the mechanisms of the blogosphere as a whole.

With the EU project blogs keep gaining in importance. Their content needs to be preserved. For Vasco Sommer-Nunes, Managing Director and founder of mokono, this is a big step on the way to archiving digital contents for our society: “Publishing content online is easy. But deleting it is easy, too. More and more knowledge is being published online only, but the continued existence of this knowledge is not always warranted. Examples like the murder of the Libyan blogger Mohammed Nabbus or arrests of bloggers consistently show that socially relevant content cannot be preserved adequately by the author only.”

In collaboration with the involved partners mokono will define and establish a robust digital preservation policy for blogs to grant long-term access to the content of blogs.
