Vancouver, Canada, May 04, 2011 --(PR.com)-- VROC Connects BC Students with Scientists
The British Columbia government has authorized a videoconferencing pilot project for schools in the province for the remainder of the 2010/11 academic year. The project, which is supported by a Year of Science grant, will help teachers communicate exciting scientific discoveries and academic research to their students. Classrooms will use existing videoconferencing technology to connect real-time with scientists and researchers.
“The primary goal of B.C.’s Year of Science is to get young people interested and excited about science and asking questions,” said Dr. Moira Stilwell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, “Virtual Researcher On Call helps us achieve that goal.”
Virtual Researcher On Call (VROC), an educational program of the London, Ontario-based charity Partners In Research, is providing the videoconferencing sessions. VROC aims to provide videoconferencing sessions for science teachers and their students until the end of June for any school in BC that wishes to participate. Teachers may visit the project website bc.vroc.ca, and request a session on any science-related topic.
VROC National Program Manager, Kevin Cougler, says that this type of technology puts students at the forefront of e-learning. “Students in the classroom can read from a textbook or they can read on an Internet site, but when they are actually exposed to people in real time and have a chance to interact with them, that's when the excitement begins. When you take advantage of videoconferencing and the Internet, you're using a medium that’s familiar to students.”
VROC’s mandate is to inspire students to develop an interest in science and learn more about related careers by connecting them with world-class researchers across Canada.
