The Medal Play Golf Tour Visited Westin Mission Hills Gary Player Course
Rancho Mirage, CA, May 04, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Medal Play Golf Tour visited the Gary Player course at the Westin Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage Sunday. “We held our first qualifier for the World Golfers Championship today” said tour director Blane Freytag. “The tour is getting increased exposure while giving local golfers a venue to qualify for the WGC Nationals in San Antonio, TX in late September.”
The Championship Division was dominated by Chris Kruger who had the hot hand on this day. Kruger, playing in his fourth tour event, unleashed with a net 66 to easily outpace runner up Shaun Clark by 4 shots. “I have been practicing a lot. It felt good to have everything come together today,” commented Kruger after the round. Greg Austin had his best round on tour to place 3rd with a net 71.
Tom Taylor, who placed 3rd at the last event, broke through for his first win on tour with a spectacular round of net 71 in the Gold Division. Taylor was the only Gold Division player to break par on this day. Jan Koelsch buckled down on the back nine to finish 2nd with a net 73 and Michael Rivera took third with a scorecard playoff over Player of the Year leader Alan Forbes.
The Silver Division saw Steve High shoot his best round on tour to find the winners circle with a net 70. “Wow! That was the best round I have shot in a long time,” exclaimed High after the round. Steve Challenger claimed second with a scorecard playoff over Steve Vance.
There were 6 players battling for 2 Qualifying spots in the SoCal’s first ever World Golfers Championship Qualifier held in conjunction with the MPGT event. Charlie Reiter and Greg Austin both earned spots in the National Finals with fine net 71’s. Local qualifying will continue through the summer at MPGT events.
The tour returns to action at the PGA West Nicklaus course in La Quinta on Saturday, May 21st.
