Tires Optional is an easy read that seniors, baby boomers, automobile lovers and humor seekers will all get a kick out of. Woven in with his descriptions of ’57 T-Birds, Barracudas and Buick Wildcat convertibles are Reale’s fascinating anecdotes of one entertaining automotive episode after another.
In 1963, for instance, unable to sell his ’55 Buick for the “inflated” asking price of $25.00, Rick and two of his friends instead set off across country in the mechanically questionable chariot. They had $325.00 in their pockets. Despite being slowed down by a coupleof speeding tickets, paying a $34.00 fine in a police station at 3 a.m., getting lost in St. Louis for two hours, performing one oil change and, of course, attending mass on Sunday morning, they made the first 3000 miles in a mere fifty-four hours.
In those days a “good” car cost less than a hundred bucks, drain oil was ten cents a quart and a gallon of gas was only two bits. Chuck Berry and Fats Domino filled up the air waves through the bulky am radios that were stuffed into the middle of the dash. Kids were kids, cars were cars, and when the two of them got together, there was always an event of one kind or another.
Tires Optional keeps alive the memories of those things that were important and which the contemporary “throw away society” has for the most part now thrown away: sturdy, stylish cars, friendships that were loyal, a sense of adventure and a country that was strong and respected.
