Challenging Audiences to Stay in Their Seats
Los Angeles, CA, March 07, 2007 --(PR.com)-- “Like the best works of Mario Bava, Dario Argento or their young U.S. inheritor Dante Tomaselli, 'The Abandoned' works best as a macabre fever dream.” By Dennis Harvey, VARIETY

Mexico's Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron, Adriana Barraza and Guillermo Arriaga nabbed key Academy Award nominations this year, right along with Spain’s Penelope Cruz, who remarked "It’s been a long time coming". This is the first time in the history of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences, a.k.a. home of the Oscars, that this much recognition has been paid to Latino actors, not to mention the Oscars that Gustavo Santaolalla (Composer, “Babel”), David Marti and Montse Ribe (Makeup Artists "Pan's Labyrinth"), Eugenio Caballero and Pilar Revuelta (Art Director and Set Decorator "Pan's Labyrinth”) took home.

Penelope Cruz must likewise be pleased with the attention fellow Spaniards are getting in the new film, "The Abandoned", distributed by After Dark Films and Lionsgate Entertainment; which released in over a thousand Theaters on Friday February 23. This is the latest thriller by Spanish writer and director Nacho Cerda, who first grabbed the public by their guts with his controversial 1994 film, Aftermath.

"The Abandoned", voted Fan Favorite at After Dark’s "8 Films to Die For" Festival in November 2006 stars Anastasia Hille, Karel Roden, Valentin Ganev, Paraskeva Djukelova and the Spanish-American Carlos Reig-Plaza. Quadralingual and bi-continental, Reig-Plaza has proven his ability as a character, ethnic and age-shifting chameleon across theatre, film and television in Europe and the United States. Carlos referred as the “surly driver” by Variety has been getting a lot of fantastic reviews for his incredibly dark, mysterious and menacing performance in the film where he interprets a Russian Driver.

Carlos’s rich professional background includes the following films: Paco Plaza’s Romasanta: The House of the Beast (Best Picture, Malaga’s Film Festival 2004, Jury Winner-Best International Film, Fantasy Film Festival in Montreal), in which he starred alongside Elsa Pataky (Snakes On A Plane); Jesus the Driver (Best Picture Winner, Lake Placid Film Festival; Latino Film Festival); Hijos del Viento (Sons of the Wind); Selva Roja (Red Jungle); Tormenta de Verano (Summer Storm); and the Mexican-American co-production of Torquemada, in which Carlos played Father Cruz, a priest tormented by his past.

American Theatre goers have enjoyed Reig-Plaza in El Guernica de Picasso (Picasso’s Guernica); A Midsummer Night’s Dream; and Custom of the Country (Las Costumbres del País,) which garnered him many favorable reviews for his portrayal of Count De Chelles.

Viewers have been delighted by Reig-Plaza’s television performances in Un Paso Adelante (One Step Forward); Policias (Cops); Hospital Central (Central Hospital) El Comisario (The Police Inspector); Reyes y Rey (Kings and King); and For the People, not to mention his American debut as the beloved Father Matthews, Reig-Plaza’s recurring role on Days of Our Lives.

The multi-faceted Carlos Reig-Plaza built his foundation on sturdy pillars: He embraced the classics at the European School of Theatre in the University of Oxford, worked with Tina Packer in the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Massachusetts, then continued his studies at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting in New York, and later, at the Beverly Hills Playhouse with Milton Katselas.

Overnight sensation, years in the incubator, Carlos Reig-Plaza is making an impact throughout the United States with an eerie whisper befitting the widely-marketed, beautifully horrific, "The Abandoned". Coming up next for Carlos is Body Armor starring Chazz Palminteri and Til Schweiger and Hidden Camera with Dean Cain.
