The Prime Spot Radio Show Kicks Off Smithsonian Week in Long Beach, CA
Long Beach, CA, March 08, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Long Beach, CA Poet G. Murray Thomas, host of TPSradio at California State University and ThePrimeSpot.com kick off Smithsonian Week on The Poetry Show. On Friday, March 9th, two Smithsonian Scholars will be interviewed at 9pm: Dovie Thomason and Jim Garry. The Long Beach Arts Council, producers of "Speakology", a spoken word festival scattered throughout the City through March 25th, provides the profile of the Cowboy and Indian; read further to get a glimpse of G. Murray Thomas (as seen on SwingTV.net) and TPSradio's featured Poet, Mindy Nettifee.
Dovie Thomason, Story Telling Scholar
Dovie Thomason first heard the voices of the Animal People, Tricksters and Heroes in the stories of her Lakota and Kiowa Apache relatives. With understanding and sly humor, she has spent a lifetime joining those voices to share wise, boisterous teaching tales with audiences globally. For over twenty years, Dovie Thomason has shared her gift with school audiences. She was one of Connecticut's original Master Teaching Artists, listed by state arts councils nationally, and recognized as a Master Traditional Artist by the NEA. She is a three-time winner of the ALA Notable Recording Award, Wordcraft Circle of Native Writer's Traditional Storyteller of the Year 2002, and a respected presenter at major festivals and conferences.
Jim Garry, Folklore Scholar
Jim Garry began his career as a naturalist, but soon became interested in the people of the West, drawing natural history of the region into his work. He has been a cowboy, horse wrangler, media consultant, wilderness guide, teacher, political consultant, river runner, artist-in residence, biologist, folklore collector and more. He now works as a freelance lecturer, writer and storyteller, teaching others about our western and wildlife heritage. His research and teachings center on the overlap between natural history, human history, folklore and myth.
G. Murray Thomas, Host of TPSradio - The Poetry Show Every Second Friday
G. Murray Thomas currently edits a monthly listing of poetry events for Poetix.net, the SoCal poetry calendar, and hosts The Poetry Show on The PrimeSpot Radio on KBeach.org. Thomas' first full length collection of poems, Cows on the Freeway, was published by iUniverse. He has also authored five chapbooks and Paper Shredders, an anthology of surf poetry, is yet another of Murray's nine publications.
Mr. Thomas has performed his poetry all over Southern California and fronted Murray, a spoken word/garage jazz band. He's entertained at Lollapalooza, The Whiskey, The Coach House, the Knitting Factory and the 1996 National Poetry Slam. G. Murray Thomas hosts a monthly Poetry Reading at Barnes and Noble in Long Beach and will grace the stage at another Speakology event at Viento Y Agua Cafe on March 17th. Thomas is currently at work on a few projects, one of them is a novel.
Mindy Nettifee, Featured Guest on The Poetry Show
Mindy Nettifee was born in Iowa but spent her formative years in Southern California. She has performed her work since the age of 13, sharpening her poetic chops among the once rowdy Orange County poetry community and hosting The Big Damn Poetry Slam in Long Beach. She competed on three National Poetry Slam teams and coached the Orange County/Long Beach slam team in 2000 and 2001. Mindy has toured across the US and Europe and served for four years as a member of the Tebot Bach’s Five Penny Poets. She has published her work in various journals and magazines, and her poem “Metal Detectors and Other Important Thresholds” was a nominee for the Pushcart Prize. Her first full length collection is entitled Sleepyhead Assassins on Moon Tide Press. Nettifee is editor-in-chief of GetUnderground.com
Mindy has been called both a “beacon of brilliant” and a “freakishly prodigious wonderwoman,” but the greatest compliment she has ever received was the little ditty that Rick Lupert wrote for her, based on the song her mother taught her when she was four to learn how to spell her last name.
